The Matrice 30T drone is prematurely returning home before the displayed flight time remaining elapses. This issue occurs inconsistently and impacts the drone's ability to complete missions effectively.

  • Plan a flight mission for the Matrice 30T drone.
  • Ensure that the flight time remaining is displayed accurately on the control interface.
  • Start the flight mission.
  • Observe the drone's behavior as it progresses through the mission.
  • Note that in some instances, the drone begins to return home before the displayed flight time remaining has expired.
Expected Behavior: The Matrice 30T drone should continue its mission until the displayed flight time remaining reaches zero, unless manually instructed otherwise by the operator.
Actual Behavior: The drone initiates its return home procedure prematurely, sometimes significantly before the displayed flight time remaining reaches zero.  Are there any settings I can adjust to fix this issue?

Zero is too late.  The moment when it decides to do its RTH depends on the distance the drone is from the home point and the remaining battery level.

It calculates the optimal return point so as to never drop the battery voltage too low.

It's always been like this, on all models and it's not ready to change.

You can always refuse RTH manually, but be careful.  There is a moment when the engines will cut off.

LOL you want the drone to stay in the air until the flight remaining time (which is only an estimate, and sometimes not a very good one) reaches zero? What then? It sounds as if you are saying you'd like it to try to stay aloft until it falls out of the sky.

The LiPo batteries that power these drones are notoriously fickle beasts. Depending on age, usage history, temperature, payload, wind, and many other factors, their depletion curves can be pretty plastic and generally non-linear. As @LV_Forestry correctly noted, the flight controller software is trying to do its best to estimate when a RTH should be initiated, based on distance from Home and an imperfect estimate of battery level (and thus "flight time remaining" which is even more imprecise). It's just trying to make sure it can get Home.

As suggested, you can always override RTH. An experienced pilot can safely push the limits beyond the automated safeguards. But there are limits, of course.

Do you start looking for a gas station only when your fuel level reaches 0%? I find it hard to believe that a pilot flying a drone of this size fails to understand this concept.

@gerardo_cape are you talking about the remaining flight of the mission? I understood it like that but it seems others understand it as the flight time remaining on your battery. Could you clarify?

PS: the mission time is a vague time calculated on the parameter you defined, same as the amount of pictures taken. It doesn't really influence the result if higher or lower.
