What version of OS and iMedia Converter Deluxe you have?
I try that app, but the convert takes about 1sec and output file is empty.
No matter what I do everytime same result.

Did you film in MP4 or MOV?
Each time I try to convert H265 MOV to PRORES in IMedia Converter Deluxe, the conversion fails.

I am using the exact same workflow you are.

Video format: H265 4K 30fps
Transcoded using iMedia Converter Deluxe
Editing & grading: Final Cut Pro X ver 10.3
Os Sierra 10.12.2

I had to build a custom transcode setting in iMedia Converter Deluxe. The conversion to ProRes would not allow the original resolution to pass through, it was to high. iMedia Converter Deluxe would only allow 2000X2000, so it failed each time. After building the custom settings, I arrived at the below sequence through FCPX

How did you do custom transcode setting for 4k resolution? I can convert anything under 2000x2000 but if more than that it crash everytime.

Forgive my codec ignorance but why 265 over 264 if it's such a ball ache to edit on the mac. Is it worth the messing with a converter?

I change the codec from ProRes to AIC (apple intermediate codec) and set it to the original resolution. FCPX imports that file perfectly.

H265 provides more detail more efficiently (I believe the common name is HEVC, High efficiency video codec(?)).

Is the bitrate the same though - with 264 and 265? For the sake of storage space I don't know if it's worth messing with transcoding or shooting as 264 and going straight to edit. I have more storage than I do have battery power so not too worried about getting more on the card.

I accidentally recorded some footage at 1080p 120fps with h265. This app is limited to 60fps. Premiere CC 2017 lets me import the 120fps h265 now. The first time I tried, I was prompted to install an HEVC codec automatically. Now I can drag them straight in. But going forward, will only record in h264.

Handbrake (free) does a decent job of converting the files to h264, and it keeps the fps intact. I have it set to output h264 with RF set to 1.

No Prores codec with Handbrake.
Better imedia converter or similar for transcode to Prores.
It's not a good idea transcode H265 to H264.

It doesn't necessarily throw an error message, the conversion just fails.

Nice work!

But i wonder, why 265?
It doesnt give you more detail, it only consumes half the data compared to 264, and allows higher res up to 8k, as far a ive read about the 265.
Have you done any comparison with the two to see if theres actually any differences?

Much higher quality, next generation CODEC.   It can do a much better job with the same bitrate so well worth it.

at very low datarates the H265 will show a better result
and with less artifacts

but in higher datarates than 15 Mbps the quality is the same
only the filesize are different (H264 is bigger)
