Do you have to be connected to internet for the mape app to function in the GO app?

Mapping application, if you want to be truly smart ...

Do you mean for the Waypoint function, or to have the map populate in the corner of the Go app?

If you are going to be without a data connection where you plan flying, you may need to cache the maps at home while you have the internet, on Android, all you need to do is zoom into the area on the map where you intend to fly.

I see the map in the corner and can inlarge but there is no data in it, just cross hairs

I concur with Mark if you're using a device that doesn't have access to cellular data or another internet source. In addition, you would cache the map for iOS using the same method as Android, if that applies.
