I am wanting to film sporting events with a system and use for analysis at a latter date. The batteries I am seeing will not last the entire 45 minute half, the main question is all I want to do is hover for 45 minutes sbove the end zone, film, land and then put another battery in fo the second half. Will hovering use less or more battery life?

45 minutes will never happen.  20 is more realistic in a hover just hanging there with DJI batteries.

Also, remember the batteries will get better after a few charge / discharge cycles.

Your only option would be to have 2 Phantoms and another pilot.  Launch the second one when you have to land the first one and splice the videos together.  Keep doing that for the full 45 minutes.  Have plenty of batteries.

Balloon with a string would be more realistic.

"Will hovering use more or less battery life?"  As opposed to... what, flying around in a circle?  Short answer, more.  Basic forces of flight stuff; hovering uses all the power to overcome gravity whereas moving forward will generate some added lift  (let the nitpicking begin)
Maybe you are needing something more along the lines of a blimp.

Do you know how  do they work with the Phantom 2?  Intelligent?  Upgradeable?  Any risk to the unit?  I've been looking for pro's and cons on all higher mAh batteries
