Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears the controller is designed to work with phones that don't have cases on them.    Is this correct?

It all depends on the thickness of your phone and case. It may be plausible to use both if it's thin enough.

I'm currently using an Otter Box Commuter case.     I'm going to guess that will probably be too thick.   I have a Razer brand case still in the box that may work if the Commuter doesn't.

Correct, the thickness Supported is 6.5-8.5mm.

Cool.   The Razer case is barely any thicker than the phone itself.   I think it will probably work.
