Hello DJI,

Is it possible to fly the Mavic indoors safely?

Thoughts?

Thanks,

DC

Yes. Tripod mode, sets max speed to 2.2mph

https://www.dji.com/mavic

Under
Creative - Finely Tuned Control: Tripode mode "It is also great for flying indoors in small spaces where the Mavic’s normal speed may make it more challenging to fly."
Powerful - Precision Hover: "However, with forward and downward vision sensors, the Mavic can hover precisely indoors or in places without GPS."

As long as the floor has contrast and not the same pattern on the entire floor it should have no problem holding it's position until you more the sticks.

DJI has not shown any...  But I bet there will be 3rd party solutions for prop guards.

So reading this makes me think twice, actually.  It would be great to be able to add this to my company's list of service offerings and do indoor real estate videos, etc.  But if there is any chance of it getting away and potential danger... may want to think twice.

For indoor Real Estate, you could use a Osmo, or Osmo Mobile instead.

There have been many official launch videos showing rock steady performance indoors.

If like the Phantom 4, with prop guards installed ALL ovoidance systems are disabled.

From what I understand, the way the guards are installed it blocks sensors, somebody with more details might explain it more.

Because the sensors think that the prop guards are obstacles.

The tripod mode is one of the features in the mavic that made me pull the trigger.

I was using all sorts of rubber band tricks, tensioners, stick movement restrainers to basically just dumb down the travel but it didn't work very well.

I tried taking motion time lapse in the skies too and no matter how constant I thought I was holding the speed at walking pace, I couldn't.

You don't need to start the motors to record video with the Mavic. You can still use it as just a steady filming platform. The Osmo Mobile is probably better, but there's no reason why you couldn't just use this as well.

Agree that an Osmo/Osmo Mobile would be better for a walk thru but I think the continuous shot wanted is where a jib is usually used. The sweeping high ceiling to float to ground level  shot or anywhere a person can't stand and move type shot. So basically...homes of the rich.
No one is going to want a walk thru video of my 500-600 sq.ft flat.

Hey Swarm, I highly suggest you read the owner manual on the Mavic Pro and get a really solid understanding of what Atti and Opti mode means, which will more than likely be the modes the Mavic is in while you fly indoors.

Also, read my first time flying indoors incident and learn from my mistake: http://forum.dji.com/thread-73307-1-1.html

In summary, if your flight mode states Atti, your vision system may not properly function due to poor lighting, or a surface that the Mavic can't identify, thus causing slow drift.

If you are in Opti mode, the Mavic's forward and downward vision system should properly detect its level and hover precisely in place.

Either way, flying indoors is something I do not plan on doing again, it's just not worth it to me.

Good luck

Just received my drone, 2 weeks after ordering from Amazon.ca.  First flight ever was indoors in a very small room and I must say, this thing is amazing!  I made a little youtube video.

Thanks for sharing.

How loud is it?  For example, if used for a wedding ceremony, do you think the ceremony music, if amplified, would drown out the drone sound?

Thanks,

Do you have Beginner Mode enabled? I believe you have to have it turned off to fly in ATTI mode, because without GPS it won't know how to limit the range of the aircraft.

Thanks for the vid. Just got mine yesterday and only had chance to literally take off and land indoors just. It's scary! I just don't understand any of the app data or what to do with the done yet lol. I'm the sort of person to want to read everything first and fully understand it all before I'm confident in what I'm doing. Is recommend this approach to all noobs too. It makes sense to give yourself the best chance

It's quite loud to be honest. I wouldn't recommend filming a wedding indoors with it although you could do outdoors stuff as long as you're far enough away from the subjects because of the noise. It sounds like a giant wasp ripping aound lol
