Hi I’m new to this forum and would like to post a question, which I would like a 100% definite answerer to.

I have been looking at reviews and you tube videos about the Mavic pro and the fact that it doesn’t have ATTI mode, is this right or wrong?

I am looking at buying a Mavic pro to do uav training with and thought that this would be the ideal drone to do it with.

I have enquired about the training and I know that in order to complete the flight school training you need to fly your drone in ATTI mode to complete that part of the course.

After speaking to the uav training school today they are telling me that the DJI Mavic has ATTI mode but it needs to be switched using the software which I’m taking is the DJI Go app.

The training school has said that other people have booked the course and are going to be flying Mavic pro's and seem 100% satisfied that it can fly in ATTI mode.

Can anyone shed any light on this please as I would like to know before I shell out my money, I need to know that it is fit for purpose?

Hope this is clear, thanks Mark.

According to the User manual, you cannot switch to ATTI mode. The drone automatically switch in ATTI if GPS is not available

Exactly.  The Mavic does have ATTI mode...  It's just not user selectable at this point in time.   If the Mavic looses GPS and vision system is not available it flies in ATTI mode.

At some point I am hoping DJI decides to update the firmware/software to allow this mode to be selected on/off in the DJI Go app.

Yes, the Mavic has ATTI mode but currently cannot be operated manually. If GPS signal is lost then it will go into ATTI.
For your training course, maybe that part of the training can be indoors in a multi floor building so no GPS signal will be received.

I take it that you actually work for DJI-Ken, if so you must know if this is going to be a future feature on the Mavic pro and if you do would it be sooner rather than later?

Turn off VPS.  Tape an empty bag of crisps to the top to block GPS.  And maybe SPORT mode on???  Perhaps THEN you'll have ATTI on-demand for your class.  THE REALITY IS it's that or borrow a Phantom.  The Mavic seems to have multiple trigger points and multiple ATTI modes as indicated in flight logs (GPS ATTI and ATTI) - none of which you have control over.

LOL the best part about going into ATTI mode is eating the chips, errr, crisps.  But seriously, I'll bet you'll get ATTI mode with that type of material blocking GPS (assuming the GPS transponders are located forward of the battery).

Hi Ken... Sorry to bother you but I was flying my Mavic earlier for the first time and the Mavic kept switching from GPS mode to Atti mode. It would have 13 satellites then would suddenly drop to 3 or 4 with the slightest distance or altitude change then it would jump back up to 13. Is there some kind of setting I could have wrong or do you think this is something I should be concerned about?

Where were you flying at? Was it in an open area with a unobstructed view of the sky?
If so you can connect it to the Assistant2 software and reset the aircraft setting.
Your also on the latest firmware?
And you do not have anything covering the GPS do you? Its in the top rear behind the battery.

Yes it was an an open area and I uploaded the new firmware before flying. There was nothing covering the battery either but I will try to reset it like you recommended. I really haven't had much time to play with it yet so I just wasn't sure if I had something set up wrong. Thanks for the advice!

Sounds good, let me know how it goes after a factory reset. Here is an article, it may also be the KP index.
There's apps that you can check to see what it is.

Hi

did this feature make it into the latest firmware release? I too have to take my pfco course and they are insistent that the drone needs to be able to be switched into ATTI mode manually for me to use the Mavic.

I seems odd that a user can't practice using ATTI (outdoors and without a crisp packet) in a controlled manner before they encounter a real life loss of GPS which causes it to switch over automatically. My first ever experience of ATTI (on a different drone - still haven't got my Mavic delivered but that's a different thread) was not pleasant, took me a while to regain control.

I am quite happy to take delivery of custom firmware with this feature enabled and test it if it's in the pipeline. If it isn't then I seriously need to reconsider the Mavic for commercial use!

To get my permission to fly from the CAA, I had to demonstrate that I could fly the drone in ATTI mode with with Phantom.

With not being able to manually select ATTI mode, its going to be very hard for the CAA in the UK to give permission to fly the Mavic in the UK skies.

I flew the Mavic last night and it kept getting compass error mid-flight and kept switching back and forth between GPS and ATTI mode.  Is this related to the kp index?  It was above 3 and my friend actually saw the Aurora Borealis in Canada.

No, currently there is no manual ATTI.

Ken, how do we get this requested as a feature? Is there a formal way of asking for it or is it just wait and see ? As several have said on here if the Mavic is to be used in a commercial operation in the UK it needs to demonstrate that it can be manually put into ATTI mode.

It's a fantastic piece of kit but if it can only be used as a hobby craft then that is a serious limitation.

Thanks

It's been requested, don't know if they will add it or not.
And for commercial operations, I would think you would want a more professional aircraft like a M600, Inspire, or at the least a P4 all which have manual ATTI.

Thanks Ken... yes the kind of work I will be doing will be with the Inspire as the main vehicle. However there are some places you can't lug an Inspire or M600 to! The Mavic fills a massive hole in the portability aspects of filming and surveying in remote areas. The Inspire 2 and Mavic 2 with it's upgraded h.265 codecs and all round sensors will be all I ever require for TV work (here's hoping...)!

Yes the Mavic is portable and as I already own a Phantom and the Mavic would be able to do things that my phantom can't do due to its size.

But as I said before, I don't know if anyone has got permission to fly from the CAA to fly this in the sky yet because of the lack of the manual selection of ATTI mode.

It is a shame that its not been added yet as the Phantom and Inspire are too big.

I'm eager to see a Manual-ATTI option on the DJI Mavic (to pass the British CAA PfCO licence, as the current school where I've passed my Theory insists on Manual-ATTI). Is there a feature-request site for DJI, where we can submit this request ? The more requests coming in, perhaps the more inclined DJI would be to add it to the to-do list.

The size of the Mavic "Pro" makes it uniquelly useful in some cases, for Professional use.

If DJI is serious about calling it a "Mavic Pro", please enable "Pro" features on it !
