iPad mini in controller arms works!

I tried my iPad mini in the controller and it works! It fits into the spaces in the support arms and is quite well attached. I have no doubts this is how I'll be flying most of the time.

If you use the device with that cable, I'd recommend getting a right-angle lightning cable so you don't risk damaging your cable or port.

Agreed, and its on the list! I'd also like to get a much shorter cable so there isnt so much extra hanging around. Cool to know that in a pinch it will work. I know people will be creating a mount for it and I'll be watching as those come out.

Will it stay there by it's self when both hands are on the controls? It looks like it'll fall out if your not holding it in place.

In the coming weeks you'll have your choice of 50 different mounts from all out there that will be creating them

If not there isn't much that can't be fixed with zip ties.
It looks like it fits as snugly as anything will.

I saw that too... But he is really just attaching a P3/P4 tablet holder to a hunk of plastic. You can buy that mount, as a replacement part from DJI, but it is prohibitively expensive.

I am sure there will be a huge wave of cases, sun shades, and tablet holders, and skins coming over the next couple months. I am sure they will all be less expensive than the current offerings. One being the mount you mentioned, and the other being a $40 sunshade.

Nice that people are getting creative, but you have to really want it to pay those prices.

Out of curiosity, what length of lightning cable do you figure would be ideal? As the time goes by waiting on my Mavic, I find myself ordering more and more useless stuff on Amazon.

Thanks for this post. That actually looks pretty good! I wish I could see a video of you manipulating the controls and such but that's probably asking too much.

There are lots of tablet mods out there so far. I don't particularly like the looks of any of them. So far this (no mod at all) looks like the best solution.

It will stay there on its own. I'm still holding onto it while i fly but it takes a bit of effort to get it out. The rubber stuff DJI uses to "grab" the phone works really well.

Thanks so much for making that vid! I think it looks great! That's how I'm going to use it, no need for an adapter in my opinion. I'll also get a short cable with right angle adapter as you mentioned.

now that is better placement! my issue with most the mounts I have seen so far is they cover the controller display. Do you think the ipad being so close to the antenna will affect the performance?

I was wondering about that too. I'm going to wait and see if there are any reports of signal degradation with this mount.

I agree with Jake - This isn't bad when you see it in the video. Tempting, actually....

I finally got around to making a video of me flying the Mavic with a ipad mini in the controller.

Two things I have found in the last few days flying the Mavic.

1. It doesn't like to switch back and forth between gps and visual flight modes. Every time it switched it would jump or jitter just a bit. I hope that is something they can iron out in a future firmware release.

2. The plastic gimbal cover will warp your footage really badly. I left it on the first few flights until I was confident I wasn't going to crash. On reviewing my footage I could clearly see the image quality warp etc every time the Mavic made a movement. Once it was in motion it seemed to be ok (except the glare etc), but as soon as it came to braking, accelerating, ascending, etc the footage would be bad.

I found some 90 angled lightning cables (6" long cable) for direct mount. Showing ipad mini is iPad mini 4 WiFi + Cellular with matte scree protector attached.
They have a opposit USB polarity so black cable need to go left side (mount iPad mini home botton to the left side).

Nice find! The one from Allputer (white one) looks like it's a bit thicker cable and maybe a bit longer? Now I've got to go and order more crap while I'm waiting!

Order is in ... great find, thanks for sharing..I can't imagine why anyone wants a mount for ipad mini, it fits perfectly into the controller, is snug, and will be perfect with this short cable, btw spec shows the cable is 8 inches. I think 6 inches might be a little short and 7 inches would be perfect ,but 8 will work.
