I just unboxed my Mavic as it finally arrived.  I realized, after calibrating the GPS, that the camera could not move freely as i did not remove the plastic insert/bracket and it was being secured into position.  Upon removing the insert, it camera/gimbal appears quite wobbly.  My question is whether or not there is always this much wobble to the gimbal when the mavic is powered off?  Or did i somehow do something to the motor?  Hoping for the best and cannot run test flight as the weather is not to good at the moment.

Could somebody with more experince please educate me on whether this is normal or not.

That's perfectly normal. Mine is exactly the same when it is powered off with gimbal lock removed.  
Put a sticker on the lock to remind you to remove it. I made this with a label priinter but you could also just use a length of red electrical tape like a flag.  Attach it as I have done and it will not impede the clips for the clear cover.
