If you are using OS 10.12.2 on a Mac, you no longer have to restart the Mac to hot swap SSDs. I was pleasantly surprised about this

Strange - which OS are you using? Maybe its a change with Sierra. Certainly DJI themselves have not announced this. I discovered by accident.

Hi Mike!

Im on 10.12.2, 5K IMac. The Reader is hooked directly to the IMac´s USB Port, no Hub inbetween.
Same on my Macbook Pro running 10.11.6
Very strange. :-/

Hi Skyclip- I'm using a 2016 MBP. Those new USB-C ports / donglegate are annoying but this may be one benefit. I was surprised.

To be sure that its not a strange procedural issue, this is what I do. Plug in USB with SSD reader and SSD attached. Then start Cinelight. Extract footage. Close Cinelight. Eject SSD. Put in new SSD. Restart Cinelight, new SSD is read.

I boiled down the Problem:
When i try to mount a fresh formatted SSD with "new" clips on it, i have to reboot.
When i mount a SSD with previously recorded material, where i simpy record additional clips, it gets
mounted instantly.
Maybe the OSX File System is writing something on the SSD wich helps mounting.

Interesting. I doubt USB-C is the reason but I thought I'd make a tongue in cheek comment. Until they become more common, finding a dongle is going to be part of the new routine.

Hello Mike, thanks for the info. I have a MBP13 2016, the one with 2 Thunderbolt 3, and 10.12.2, CineLight 0.9.26 and the DJI SSD reader attached to an Apple USB-C to USB adapter. Every time CineLight initializes the SSD it crashes. Is your MBP 2016 13 or 15 inches? Do you attach your reader to which usb hub and/or cable adapter? I tested in a MacBook Air 13 with 10.12.2 and all worked fine. Thanks for your help.

15 inch but this should not be an issue as the CPU's are of a similar gen. I attach the SSD direct to the adapter.

I have found that the current supply via USB ports can be dodgy for devices that draw more current. Use a short thick cable like the one DJI provided and use the USB-C to USB converter directly and NOT a hub.

Er, of course you should eject the SSD before pulling it out. Try trashing your CineLight and re-installing it. It should not crash on initialization.
I'd be interested in your results.

For an unknown reason, hot swap works with the MBP Oct 2016 but not with a Mac Pro. Both running 10.12.2.

For an unknown reason, DJI didnt choose an simple Format for the SSD, so that People can easily access the Files. ;-)
And the worst Part: They didnt fix it or improve it.

You can easily automate the process using scripting.

I'm on a 2015 iMac 5K running High Sierra, I have to reboot. Fortunately the iMac is equipped with a hybrid drive, so reboot is extremely fast, but it is truly annoying tohave to do this.

it's a known issue DJI want's it's SSD to be unique and not able to be copied, even if it means the consumer pays with time waste, it's typical of a Nazi company, ala Apple, I've been a fan of apple ever since the very first Mac 512, the only thing I always hated and hurt them in their early years was the fact that they were totalitarian, absolute control, I shouldn't say were, because they still are. DJI follows Apples model to the tee.
