For some reason a large swarm of bugs hovered around and flew into my drone. I could not identify the type of bugs, perhaps they were flying ants or gnats of some sort. They followed it around as I tried to fly away from them. Is it the sound that attracted them? Anyway I have bug guts all over my drone and propellors.

The noise could have been a contributor, but I would assume that the heat from the quad would have attracted the bugs the most.

Are you sure they weren't tiny surveillance drones?

Ah. Yes. This could be the case! They obviously need to work out obstacle avoidance and better control in high winds though!

There is a bug somewhere telling the family that a bunch of his friends were attacked by a fly machine

Haha. Well, I wish it was really that easy - these bugs can be removed with a damp cloth...

There's a funny video on YouTube of a guy trying to PO  hornets by flying his drone near it. At one point, he moved in and chopped up the nest with his props. It wasn't a Phantom. It was one of those industrial drones. It sliced through the nest with no problem. When it was all said and done, if you thought your drone looked bad with a few bugs splattered,  you should see his. Guts everywhere.
