Dear @ll,
I'm planning a trip to the Peruvian Andes and I'm concerned about the lesser maximum service ceiling for Mavic as compared to P3 and P4 series.
We'll be hiking to 4980 - 5000 m, perhaps fly slightly above than the maximum 5000 m in the tech specifications for Mavic.
Is because of some barometric sensors can fail or because of the air density and flight conditions ?
What if I fly to 5200 - 5300 m ???
Thanks a lot.

I won't be of great help but the only thing I know of will be the reduced lift from the propellers due to the reduced air density. Obviously the higher you go the less dense the air is and the more power the Mavic will need to maintain flight. It'll get to a point where max power will only just maintain a hover but don't know how DJI tested this on their published ceiling. That height for the Mavic could be around 20,000ft (as an example). Don't know what else it might effect on the internals.

I flew one in Cusco and it did just fine.

Near Ollantaytambo was good too.

I didn't fly in Machu Picchu as they said it was forbidden, but I imagine it would work there too.

I have flown well over 14,000 ft (max reported was 4,400 meters) but have gotten reports it can fly to 6,000 meters. The listed max is 5,000 meters which just means that DJI says it will fly that high according to its listed specs. If you fly higher than that you are on your own but based on the performance I have seen it should do OK. I would expect slower rate of climb and higher power consumption but I think it will do fine.

Machu Picchu is fairly low. It will have no elevation related issues at that elevation. Legal issues are another matter

Many thanks, I was concerned on the mountain passes at 4900 m, Colca Canyon, Titicaca lake, etc which are higher than Machu Picchu.I'll have the try and keep you informed
