Do I need to set (RTH) location before I take off, or will my phantom automatically know my location to return?

You should read your manual.

You shouldn't launch without a homepoint.  It will set itself automatically when you have the adequate six satellites.  It will indicate same by flashing green lamps 20x in back of the AC.  It will also show an "H" on the map on your mobile device.

You should read your manual.  Flying without reading the manual often leads to losing the AC.

Always amazes me when people fly an expensive toy and obviously haven't looked at the  manual!!!! It really is asking for trouble.

You need to set home point for sure RTH. If ya don´t set it then the home point will change and ya risk a fly away during RTH.

Some one mentioned you should actually update again while it's hovering at take off, not sure if it's an advantage but I have always done that and my Drone has always come back within feet while on RTH...

No ... there's no advantage at all.
The Phantom sets its home point quite well without you interfering.

Never done that here, it sets the home point shortly at power up. And advises you to check it on the map. If all looks good, why redo it?

Hi everyone,
according to the user manual (v.1.4 - 2010.10) if toggle the S2 switch on the remote controller back and forth at least twice to initiate Smart RTH, the P3S will first ascend to the RTH altitude, then return to the last recorded Home Point if a GPS signal is available, but during my test flight on P3S it began the "autolanding" process (see point I, K, M and Q) rather than the RTH procedure. How is it possible? What did I do wrong or forgotten? I ask for help! Thanks!

Just a side note, any time you do any updating make sure to check the settings in the app to make sure nothing changed. RTH didn't switch to auto land, the RTH height didn't reset, etc.  As far as the RTH definitely make sure when you are about to take off that you hear the voice tell you that "the home point has been updated please check it on the map". Very important.

I find it easier to learn by reading on here, when I purchased my first drone I to read the manual but to take it all in is impossible, well it was for me, asking questions on here and reading what others have put on here is a very good way to learn, I bet you will never forget the RTH sequence:-)

A sure fire way is to calibrate compass before flight. I t is also a good idea to practice RTH and re-taking control in flight a couple of times. It is really important to be prepared for the time your bird separates from the remote.  I nearly crapped my pants the first time it happened, but now I am calm & prepared  knowing how I & my P4 is going to react.

How do you know she's cute?  I have had bad experience before, going just on the sound of the voice.  I remember one called Sweet Kitty.  Awesome voice.  Used to call her on the phone and make her talk me to sleep.  Then I met her.  I'll be kind and just say,  she was a whole lot of woman.
