I'm having several issues:

1) I can't update my controller. In DJI Assistant 2 it's showing as "V00.00.0000" as the current version. Downloading the update goes ok but it always fails at installing.

2) Drone connects and flies ok in Wifi mode but the controller won't connect to the drone.
3) Controller is unable to factory reset.

Is my controller and drone bricked???

I'm this close to returning it. Please help!

Update thru the app. I never use Assisstant. Make sure you have fast internet. I use Ip6S+ with no issues whatsoever...

Just to clarify, have you tried upgrading via the Go app or just with the Assistant 2?

I tried with the Go app but after the mandatory firmware updates my controller wouldn't connect to the Mavic or the mobile app.

I've returned the unit and will be repurchasing.

But how do I ensure this doesn't happen again with my replacement?

When updating the firmware in general, you would want to ensure that you have a stable internet connection and that the USB cabling is secure. That goes for both the Go app or the Assistant 2 program.

Did you tried to update the firmware by DJI Assistant 2? What is the error code?
