The country I am visiting (Croatia) requires ceritifications for drones that have a Kinetic Energy greater than 79 J.

Given the specs that I've pulled:
Mass: .3 kg
Velocity: 3m/s

plugging in the equation   that comes out to 1.35 J... that seems incredibly low, is my calculation wrong?

For instance the DJI Mavic specs:
Mass: 7.34 kg
Velocity: 5m/s
That comes out to 91.75 J

Thanks in advance.

Try 0,734kg instead of 7,34kg for the Mavic

Hi CHEUCKLATE,

Your calculation above is correct but unfortunately, your initial figure for velocity is wrong.  I think you need to input the highest potential energy the drone has in flight which is 13.89m/s (50KPH) not 3m/s.  If you do this you should get a figure closer to 29J which makes more sense and is below the regs in Croatia.  The Mavic would top out at 121J which would indeed fall into the regulations.

Hope that Helps.

Use this calculator for calculation. For Mavic is needed registration in Croatia.
Aprox 117J produce this unit.

The main question is what case is applicable:
  • Spark hitting something horizontally at full maximum speed
  • Spark falling down after a catastrophic total power loss at a high altitude
The second is more likely the main question of flying regulator.
