To answer your question, uploading higher-def files (e.g. 4K) is the way to go. Obviously, you need to view the higher def version as well. But it doesn't matter if you're not using a 4K screen; the 4K version will still look superior. YouTube's compression (bit-rate) varies according to video resolution and frame-rate. They're much more generous at resolutions above 1080p, and it's that reduced compression more so than the number of on-screen pixels, that has the biggest impact on picture quality.

I record in 4k, then change to 1080p in post edit and upload to YouTube. The YouTube version looks much worse than the 1080p on my computer.
Someone suggested I should upload to YouTube in 4k. I'm going to try that

I render some of my clips in 4k using Davinci then upload them to youtube and wait until they are at 4k or whatever yt finish them at.

Well, youtube does add lots of compression, so it will always look worse.
I doubt if uploading in 4K makes a difference, but it is worth a try!
