I have seen great DIY solutions.
But then again, with most field recorders, they are pretty cheap to buy as an accessoire

I was thinking of using a couple of old iPhones to record the sound in a couple of places.

That would be a nice experiment.
I have seen my uncle make a DIY deadkitten with some furry stuff and velcro.
Make sure you test it beforehand, as it can be too much quickly.

Both indoor and outdoor with and without and check if it sounds muffled with the deadkitten.
And if you don't hear the ugly wind noise anymore.
It will always have 'some' effect (like muffled) but if you loose all highs, it might be too thick.
It's quite weird fabric they use, but it works quite well.
