Any suggestions on video editing software that is cheap and reliable. I am looking for something simple to learn that makes good results.

Black Magic Davinci Resolve is free, not precsiely easy to learn but it's main competitor to AE/Premiere now and once you ge tthe knack of it it's  fast program to use. Downside it does need a fairly powerful system to leverage it. There's two version Free and Studio, but free is good enough for most users unless you need advanced features like LUTs and some FX.

Apple users should look no further than Final Cut Pro X. It has everything. If you don't mind a slight learning curve with Correction and Color Grading then you will be happy as a pig in....etc. Also there is a mountain of free tuorials, LUT's and plug in's online. Going back to Correction and Grading, you will have to learn that by trial an error whatever editor you use but FCPX is so simple and non-distrctive to your original media you can experiment to your hearts content.
