Been on auto, and on 2.4ghz. In United States, Italy and Greece. Mostly rural, some urban settings (Venice, for example). Routinely disconnects after about 500-600M, forcing RTH.

Nope, not faulty. The RC is a toy. Under powered and super sensitive to antenna aim. The RC-N1 is better, the RC Pro is best.

What say you DJI? Perhaps I can replace this with the RC2 and pay the difference ? Absurdly limited range thus far

You do know you are breaking the law right? You must fly within vlos. Aka VISUAL LINE OF SIGHT.  I used to be like you, flying way beyond visual line of sight. Until a cop saw me flying beyond vlos. He came up and ask if I can see my drone. I said no, I'm watching it on my remote. He said I have to be able to see my drone to fly legally. He gave me a warning and said next time if he catch me flying beyond vlos, he can take my drone away and give me a fine. Now when I fly, I look around for cops and scared to fly beyond vlos. Don't be that guy who gets caught doing illegal things with his drone. So tell us, do you still see your drone at 500-600 meters? I bet not. I have to rc with the mavic 3 pro and is more than enough to fly within vlos.

Mr tough guy huh lol. Drones have many laws you must obey to fly legally. Yes its your drone you can break whatever laws you want until you get caught lol. It's like people speeding in their car every day. All fun and games till you see flashing lights behind you.  XD

Like mentioned above, the range is not that great with the Dji RC and much better with the RC-N1 or RC Pro. If you are flying in the EU, then the drone transmission will change to CE, this handicaps the drone with range and limits the power from the RC. 500 to 600 meters is really close for it to disconnect, make sure you are pointing the RC towards the drone itself as that RC has built in antennae's.

Hello there. Sorry for the inconvenience. The main factors that affect the image transmission distance are firmware, signal transmitter power, attenuation, obstruction, and electromagnetic interference. Please check the notes below and see if it will help:
1. Check the aircraft image transmission distance in your country.
2. Check if the aircraft firmware, remote controller firmware, and app versions are the latest. If not, please update the firmware to the latest versions first.
3. Check the remote controller antenna position. Please place your remote controller antenna in the optimal position.

4. Keep note of tree and house obstructions near the flying field. After flying for a period, note the obstruction near the horizontal line to ensure that there are no visible obstructions in the aircraft's direction.
5. Check whether there is significant interference in the flight environment. Please turn on the Image Transmission Settings to check the real-time channel quality. Or provide a screenshot or a recorded video for us to see significant interference. If the interference is significant, we recommend changing the flight environment. Common electromagnetic interference sources include but are not limited to Wi-Fi hotspots, routers, Bluetooth devices, high-voltage power lines, high-voltage transmission stations, mobile phone base stations, and television broadcasting towers.
If the issue persists after following the steps above, kindly provide us a video of the operation together with the screenshot of the About page showing the RC firmware, Aircraft firmware, and App version. Thank you for your kind understanding and valued support.

xd im thinking about throwing two pizzas in the oven at the same time. how much over recommended time/temp should i go? or should i not do this because the recommended serving size is under 1 pizza? lmk how to proceed ty in advance

You can get it, but there had to NO signal Interference.

Having same issue... Lost signal at R = 100m & never got beyond 2.2 km over open sapces (water).

Something you can do for those farther runs is set the flight before hand and it run on its own. And set it to compete flight path if signal to remote is lost
