Thats funny.   we use the phrase maid road here all the time to describe the biggest/most used road into a town regardless of what it's really called.

Makes me think of a passage in one of Bill Bryson's books - "You makes the sqaua" meaning you go around the square.

With directions like that no wonder I get lost all the Ime.

When you get to the roundabout, go round about ....The music goes round and round, and it comes out here...

Thanks Mr Brown. Actually the bulk of the traffic was due to people travelling to and from the beach, which is 1 km west from here.
