Reclaimed Nature - Travis Landfill

Great shot.    Always super nice to see areas being reclaimed by nature.

At least it wasn't developed on.  There was a housing development in the Central Florida area that was built over an abandoned landfill.  The buyers of the home were not aware of that fact and now many homes foundations are cracking as the soil in that area experiences significant settling.  One crack shown on the news was 2" wide and the sides of the crack varied by 3/4" in depth.   

Is that a car park through the middle of the shot?

I can't get over the size of these garbage dumps. Imagine that they were below seal level and now they can be seen from space.

That's a good shot and a great place to do some flying.

it's the methane emissions from them which are the most worrying.

They used to have taps for methane years ago. Hopefully they are inactive at this point. Most of the dumpng stopped 30 years ago.

They used to have flare pipes here , like chimneys, to burn it off. Until it dawned that a valuable resource was being wasted. Now in many places it's collected and used to fuel generators.

Yes, Even after toxic pollutants and radioactive waste. It may have a half life of a few hundred thousand years but eventually mother nature will reclaim it. At least it's starting to look good.

Staten Island was the dumping ground for NYC for decades. We have garbage mountains that can be seen from space. This is one of them. The good news is we're full and there's no more dumping. The last stuff that was crammed here was the rubble after 9-11. They used the area to sort the wreckage and try to find body parts.

We have stopped piling garbage for a long time here.
Recycling most and burning the rest.

Believe it or not our garbage was burned too. Those piles are just the ashes.
