Maize planting down in the depth of Magiligan with Drenagh Farms...

Sowing maize with two Samco 6 row maize drills on John Deere 6R155 & 6215R is Montgomery Contracts and Joe from Drenagh Farms making ready in front with the Case IH Puma 240 on the 5 metre Kuhn Power Harrow HR5004.

Maize grown here is fed as part of the ration for the dairy cows at Drenagh Farm.

Maize is sown under a bio degrable plastic and sprayed with a herbicide to keep grass and weeds from smothering the maize in the early stages

I got caught out the other year picking some of this field corn,     absolutely solid even after cooking. but it looked so nice.

Depp I think it's the same stuff they make the clear windows on pre made sandwiches,   made from PLA ( Polylactic Acid) should degrade in the ground in around 16 weeks.

It's all about the timing and availability.  Well, maybe a little luck thrown in wouldn't hurt.  

Maize sowing was a familiar sight each year, back in France. But I never saw it on that scale, nor under plastic.

That's a challenge in itself

I hope one day they will find a good alternative for the herbicides.
If it kills plants etc., it's not going to do good to us in the long term.

well the other side is weeds and grass choke the crop and we have no crop

Yeah, I don't have the answer to everything.
But I know firsthand what it can do to a human unfortunately.
My mother in law got Parkinson's and that is linked directly to her life on a farm where they used a lot of pesticides.
We did not know back then, but now we do.
I just hope we are willing to pay the price and look for better ways.

True.
Funny enough YT suggested me a video about 'natural farming' or something like that.
No chemicals used.
Now it won't compare to the super efficient way of the modern farms, but at least it was natural
