we been under thunderstorm and tornado warning all day, so I  thought for the fun of it I would keep drone eye on the sky for a  tornado, fortunately even though we got a bad storm warning we never did see a tornado, & I got landed and under cover just in the nick of time.

Wow, those thunder clouds were quite ominous to see.    Glad you didn't have any of the tornadoes like the ones that struck in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Yes we were very lucky the tornado's missed us,  though my friend kept a very weary eye on the NOAA doppler radar so we were aware of the storm cell locations around us. I was gonna use the parrot USA I have because its rain proof,  but with the high winds around 25+ knots  I was a bit more afraid to fly the parrot drone because how much more it cost than the mavic3,  over all the Mavic3 stayed dried, Handled the wind surge like a champion and we got some great shots of a thunderstorm.
Thanks for watching DT

I am most times. But Ive been wanting to get some storm video for a while and the MAVIC3 has a really good 28x zoom len's which let me zoom in to get the feel we were right in the the middle the storm when I was actually a few miles from it

That does give you a fair margin for error

I only wish the mavic3 was rain resistant so I could have stayed up a little longer , but we could see a definitive rain wall coming across the valley and we knew it was time to get down and head for cover.

I use the explore mode zoom lens a lot on the Mavic3

That video certainly felt like having an impact on a viewer. I certainly wouldn't want to be in the middle of that. It was a brave move to take a drone flying there, but the result certainly leaves an impression.

We were keeping a good eye on the radar for the storm cells and when they started to get close I landed we were very close to cover.
Sometimes to get the money shot, it does comes with a little personal risk. knowing when not to push it to far is the trick.  Mother nature is very unpredictable,  So a good 28x Tel-zoom lens helps tons to appear close and still be safe enough distance.

Can't blame you for being cautious with the 25+ mph winds.  I have a fairly nice weather station on my live aboard boat and it seems to always be much more accurate than the local weather guessers, especially when it comes to wind gusts.  One time they predicted 20-25 mph wind gusts but in reality several of the gusts were over 37 mph per my anemometer.

Glad you were able to capture some great shots.

Thanks DT. I have a hand held anemometer I use to check wind speeds with before lifting off.  but with Thunderstorms they are so unpredictable its best to film them from as much distance as possible. So when I seen the rain wall coming across the holler it was time to land & head for cover.

You're very welcome.  Always nice to have an anemometer handy. gives a truer picture of the wind at ground level.  Unfortunately, as we know the winds are much stronger as you ascend so we just have to allow for that.

No doubt when you saw the rain coming it was time to land and get out of the inclement weather.  I got caught out once on a return flight with my old Mini 2.  Upon return I dried it out with a hair dryer real well and and didn't fly it for about a week.  I had it for 2 additional years and never had an issue with it because of that rain soaking it took.  I donated it for use by the STEM class at a local high school and last I heard it was still flying.
