Following a lengthy closure of the canal system at Marple for repairs to the Locks Flight - footage of which I posted in April - I witnessed the reopening and some of the first narrowboats passing through.

That little footbridge makes closing the lock nice and easy.  Nicely documented.

There's one of those at the majority of the locks, I recall.
It was a bit rushed, as the battery was almost exhausted and the controller was beeping away annoyingly.

We dont have many here,   but the few Ive seen on the River Chelmer you have to climb over the closed gate if you are on the wrong side.

In the Lake District most of them also took contact less payment.  SWMBOd was spending more than a penny by tapping her watch.

Impressive footage Mr. B.    The width of that lock definitely prohibits the large canal boats.  Quite the impressive process you've documented.

It's been a lot of work, but for the boating community it's been well worth it. And there's a lot of canal cruise tourism in the summer.

Great timing then to get it back open.

Speaking of the boating community I just did a salvage operation for a local boat rental company.  My dive buddy and I got it up without any damages and the rental company was super happy.  I was happy because I got paid to do something I love to do - making bubbles.

Just wide enough for one boat to pass. Thereby minimising the volume of water lost from the reservoir.

Some canals have larger locks of course, dependent on the volume of traffic they had.

Yes. That looks relatively modern. Many of the ones in England were constructed in the early 19th century, and some even in the 18th.

This particular stretch is fed by the reservoir at Toddbrook dam.  You may remember a few years ago - the one which almost breached and caused a major crisis. About 5 years ago.
Work to repair it is almost complete now.
