I think i know why OA5 pro is named "PRO"
Because only way to get good image out of it, you need to be a pro user. You have to record in dlog and grade it in post.
This camera is no longer point and shoot action camera. Its "PRO" level cinematic vlogging device.

Please fix normal color profile in future firmware?

Whats wrong with normal color profile:
-Camera over exposes, its to bright.
-Colors are strangly over saturated / unnatural.
-glow/halo on trees and other objects on bright sky.
-Color temperature is to cold? It looks blueish.

Thanks, good to see more users complaining. I agree the default IQ is surprisingly bad, considering the Action 4 is decent. Pure downgrade imho.

Same experience here. The colors are too orange which makes greens, and skin tones look weird. It almost looks like HDR is always turned on when it doesn't need to be. Images are overexposed and although there's great shadow detail, it doesn't look natural. Colors are oversaturated in most cases, and pale in some.

This is going back if the picture quality cannot be fixed.

Sure, I can shoot in D-Log mode but that means color grading each time which defeats the purpose of an action cam where you just need to point and shoot.

Colors are closer to what gopro have, too warm colors and not natural that we are used to.
Try putting in -1 EV to darken it a bit in settings or use faster shutterspeed.

ISSUES here: Camera prefers to use HIGH ISO VALUES. The shadows are not dark anymore and white clouds are not puncy

Thank you so much.  I actually found -1ev to be too dark but seems like -0.7 is great and lowered the sharpness to -2. I have to see the footage on my big screen to see the results but colors look better on the device screen. Hopefully that should do it.

Hello,
I bought the DJI Osmo Action 5 at the beginning of October 2024. I was excited to say the least as I already has a Osmo Action 3 and had good usage out of it for 2 years.

And straight out of the box using the noraml color profile, I was shocked and disappointed with the overblown, over saturation and weird HDR look in all the footage in particular skins tones. I have white skin with a little reddishness in my skin and this camera consitently and unpredictably with turn me into a big RED TOMATO.

The DJI OSMO Action 3 was better than the Action 5

I have included 4 screen shots of video footage all on the normal color profile.

One screen shot taken in a cafe on the Dji Osmo Action 3. Normal Color ProfileScreen 2 taken on the Osmo Action 5 in the exact same cafe in the exact same location with a face that looks like it has been sand blasted on the Normal Color Profile
Screen shot 3 taken outside facing the light source of the sun but the sun is set behind a build 2A
Screen Shot 3 same location but now turned around with back facing the light source ( the sun  has fallen below the building as it sets)

I agree, I just want to point and shoot without worrying about colour grading.

I completely agree, I don't have a problem with this camera because of the low bitrate, but because of the colour reproduction and the brightness, which is unnatural. Yes, I can adjust it in post-production, but why? The default state is just not satisfactory, please do something about it.

Otherwise, it's a great little camera, I'm extremely happy with everything except the very annoying 'pseudo-HDR' colours.

I'm definitely not spending my money on an Osmo Action 5 until some kind of commitment is made to address this. If someone at DJI decided this is what "normal" should look like, fine. Just add another color profile called "classic" or something that fixes these issues. The current state looks like some kind of math mistake was made when creating the normal color profile.

I agree, for me Normal Color profile is kinda weird. Dull and unnatural contrasts, washed out clouds, bizarre colors. I don't know if this is a trendy tendency in China but in Italy it looks absolutely wrong.

To prove that this isn't just a minor issue, I've started to step through comparisons of the Action 4 and 5 one-by-one. Every single one illustrates this problem. I have a doc I've collected stuff into but the forum restrictions are preventing me from linking it.

Generally the findings are:
* Colors look very unusual on the Action 5.
* The Action 5 exposes to a brighter target.
* Contrast detail (shadows, dark vs bright things) is collapsed in a way that makes the image look dimensionless.

I will add they need to be able to adjust these settings while in webcam mode. We need to be able to adjust env on the fly in the mode too and well as the color profile. OA3/4 has better class color profiling.

I agree. The HDR look is terrible. Action 4 look much more better in Normal and D-Log

Let's play an easy game of "is this the OA4 or OA 5?"

I had some inspiration, and asked myself the question "what if the HDR footage is actually.... true HDR?" Lots of stuff labeled HDR is really just pseudo tricks to increase dynamic range by fun DSP and such, but true HDR is actually an entirely different color space that will look absolutely terrible if viewed directly in a SDR environment.

So I threw some of these examples into DaVinci Resolve and remapped from Rec.2100 color space and Rec.2100 HLG gamma to Rec 709 and... well... it seems to generally improve the image quality.

While it doesn't match the Action 4's Normal (SDR?) color profile, it no longer looks wildly off:

So I have a few requests for any DJI rep that is willing to help:

1. Can you clearly document somewhere the color space and gamma curve of the Normal HDR color profile? This will help users correctly handle the footage.
2. The key request still stands: we still need access to a mode that is SDR-ready and doesn't require post-processing to be correctly viewable in SDR environments.

Defaulting to a true HDR color space is just as confusing as if D-Log M would have been the default, since both require specialized workflows that the average joe won't know how to properly follow.

Another action camera comparison, another example where the Action 5 ends up on the bottom because people don't know how to handle true HDR footage. DJI, not having a functional SDR mode is objectively impacting sales of the Action 5. It's in your best interest to fix it.
