I tried to take a more objective look at the pros and cons of the Action 5 Pro and the Pocket 3, as I was going through the buying process of choosing one or the other this week.
Despite me choosing the Pocket 3, I pretty much convinced myself to get an Action 5 Pro as well after making this video........
Either way, hopefully will help you decide which will work best for your own needs

The P3 is one of those products that come along every few years that packs a much bigger punch than anyone thought it would have. The quality the power in the small gimbal the neat package how quick you can get up and shooting and an amazing host of features well built easy to pick up and bring anywhere guaranteeing really good footage. It will be difficult to improve on this pocket 3 but interesting to see how the will . Enjoy .

Great video Ian.    I have the OP3 and it's a beast for its size and what it can be used for.  I was looking hard at the OA5 Pro but when I found out it did not have HDMI out it was a show stopper.  To be a Pro action camera I can't see why DJI would not add HDMI out.  So I'll be going with the GoPro 13 Hero for my action camera.

Agreed. DJI really out did themselves with the Pocket 3. It punches well above it's weight for what you get in terms of features for the price.

I haven't been able to try withi mne yet, but I'm assuming from what you say that a USB-C to HDMI cable doesn't work with the Action 5 Pro either?

If not then that is another missing feature I expected that is missing.

I'll add that to no built in GPS (£70 remote needed for that), and no horizon lock when recording 4K.

I saw where several people on reddit thread  posted that you can't use a USB-C to HDMI cable.  Very sad that DJI opted to not include this feature.  I'm still trying to figure out how they justify calling the OA5 a "Pro" camera.

It's not that difficult... put a micro four thirds sensor (the Mavic 3 sensor to be precise) in an Osmo and voilá, you have a MASTERPIECE of tech.

Also, I think that the Action 5 "standard" must be the actual "Pro". Later, introduce a "Pro" model with 1 inch sensor and more bitrate.

When dji moved from a 1” sensor to a 4/3 on the mavic3P the camera size grew a lot, I think it might end up no longer being called a pocket .
The action 5 I think might be followed by an action with a 1” sensor maybe action 6s.

A larger sensor would necessitate autofocus, as these action cameras are already approaching their limits for close-up focusing while maintaining a wide focal range without needing autofocus. Size and thermal are also concerns, as current-generation action cameras are significantly larger than previous models like for example a Hero 7. Insta360 released a one inch module for their modular cameras and from what I know it didn't do to well.

So I now have both the Pocket 3 and the Action 5 Pro. I bought both because I want to use the advantages of both. After experimenting a bit, I found that you can take similarly good video recordings with both. The biggest difference for me, however, is that the Action 5 Pro has the digital stabilizer, which makes it difficult to film with a cinematic look in low light conditions. In other words, with the 180° rule. This is something that the Pocket can do in its sleep. Overall, it was a good decision for me to buy both cameras because I want to use them for two different things. Firstly, we make lost place videos where we want to create relatively cinematic films in relatively dark surroundings. Secondly, next year the parachuting season starts again, and of course a gimble camera would have completely missed the mark. Now that the pressure sensor and other little gimmicks like the g-force meter work in the camera, it will definitely be great to be able to take some recordings there using these functions. All in all, I have to say that if you have both cameras you actually cover 99% of all the possibilities for which you would want to use good cameras more or less professionally.

The Pocket 3 is definitely a standout for low-light, cinematic video work. Its gimbal stabilization means it’s much better suited to capturing smooth footage with a cinematic look while following the 180° shutter angle rule, essential for realistic motion blur. This is especially helpful in low-light environments like your lost-place videos, where the Action 5 Pro’s digital stabilizer might struggle to keep up without adding noise or losing detail.

Yes, I completely agree with you. The Pocket 3 is a real powerhouse when it comes to low light and filming videos in cinema quality. In fact, it is so good that it will probably be difficult for DJI to really improve the quality. I am really curious about the Pocket 4. With the new firmware update for the Osmo Action 5 Pro, I have to say that the low-light performance of the action cam has gone up a whole notch and I am actually really positively surprised by the performance of this little powerhouse. I am really pleased that I bought both cameras and can now use all the advantages of the models. Since the last firmware update, not only has the super night mode been improved by a long way, but the stability and noise intensity as well as the blurring of the recordings themselves have also become much better in normal mode in low light. If the generally complained about incorrect driving profile of the standard setting is now changed, I think you can be more than happy with the Osmo Action 5. Since I record everything in d-log M format anyway, it is of secondary importance to me. Even with the previous firmware, it was possible to achieve a similarly good image quality from both cameras in less than optimal lighting conditions. In our last video, we use both cameras as a multi-setup and I think you can hardly see any difference in image quality and stability. At least without paying special attention to it.

I'm not posting the video to promote myself, but as an example of how the Pocket 3 and the Osmo action 5 Pro compare in terms of quality under different lighting conditions.
