DHL informed me today that Action5 has cleared customs and is on its way to my house. I will wait the new firmware without opening the package. However, since the return deadline is within 7 days, I think I will have to return it before seeing & testing the new firmware. This will certainly cause me financial loss, but I don’t care.
Thank You for reaching out. We are truly sorry for the inconvenience you are experiencing. The latest update for DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro Firmware Released was on 09/19/2024. As of at the moment we have no information on the next update date. Stay tuned for the latest release updates on DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro Firmware
Regards to bit rate of Osmo Action 5 Pro, The quality of the encoded video is influenced by both the video bit rate and the chip's encoding algorithm. If we don't focus on optimizing the encoding algorithms, increasing the bit rate beyond the saturation point won't enhance the image quality any further.
That's why, during the development of Osmo Action 5 Pro, DJI has placed a strong emphasis on improving the video encoding performance and lowering the point at which the video bit rate reaches saturation. This ensures that even in scenes with intricate and detailed textures, like a screen full of foliage, Action 5 Pro can faithfully reproduce the richness and subtleties of those details. Rest assured, it will enable you to capture sharp and vivid moments, even in high-contrast situations.
I hope this information has helped to clarify your inquiries. If you have any other questions, kindly let us know. Thank You!

We are far from the saturation point with the current firmware. Give us 120 to 150 Mbps please. This is what about 77 Mbps looks like. Way too low:

I find this statement odd. OA4 could handle higher bitrate, but OA5 with a more powerful chip cannot?
All of us here asking for the higher bitrate option understand that file size, overheating will increase, and that battery time will drop. If you poll all of us asking for the higher bitrate we would 100% be ok with those tradeoffs.

Hi and thanks for your message.
Can you confirm that the current bitrate @ 4k 50 is sufficient for a motorcycle being ridden down a tree lined avenue is sufficient.. assuming this was tested before release?
I only use my OA4 for motorcycling and particularly in country lanes (UK) so this is most important to know before purchasing the OA5P

Hi m326,
Upon checking on this matter with the relevant team, it comes to result as there's no single correct frame rate for all videos; it depends on the desired effect. Example, 30FPS will get you better cinematic motion blur, 60/120FPS will get you smoother graphics, depending on what you prefer for yourself. The only thing we can be sure of is that 4k 120FPS will reduce battery life compared to 4k 30FPS, and the video files will be very large and take more time to process in post.

Thank you. For me (I believe for many others) is quite important to know if/when firmware with higher bitrate will be released. I may return the camera if it will not be confirmed as sure thing...

Thank you for your reply but my post and this whole topic is about bitrates and not framerates. My post was asking whether DJI thinks the OA5P's bitrate is sufficient to offer acceptable quality in the situation of a motorcycle travelling down a tree lined road.
EDIT:
This is to DJI, please bear in mind that when it comes to picture/video quality of this 'action' pro camera, users will undoubtably have to edit their content and in most cases re-encode it before it is sent off to sites such as YouTube who in turn degrade it further. It is for these reasons that us the users, and I'm speaking from a motorcyclists point of view, we 'need' good quality footage to begin with. It's not just about what comes straight out of the camera.

OMG this is horrible. looks like photo from 15 years old phone or camera. This is photo or snap from the video. What was the setting you kept ??
4K60/RS/UW
texture - 2, NR - 1
ISO 100, 1/2000 shutter speed
This is a 100% crop. It will look better on a phone or tablet. But on a 4K TV or an UHD monitor the compression artifacts are easily visible.
I can understand keeping these settings as a "standard" bit rate option when you take static shots with minimal movement or you want to preserve the battery and prevent overheating. The video quality for those cases will probably be fine. BUT, if you wish people who do extreme sports, moving shots, and FPV to use your product, you have to allow using the highest bitrate the device can handle. Most moving shots are meant to be edited and used for public consumption. If the quality of those shots is terrible, nobody will use it.

Interesting comment. I have seen footage taken by both the OA4 and OA5 and the older OA4 captures more intricate detail than the newer camera.

I have seen a lot of differences where another is better. Last video I watched was in the forest where OA5P had a lot of more details in leaves than OA4.
But then I have seen it vice versa. I have no idea what to believe or are there lens problems like someone posted the picture where right side was always blurry and left was always sharp.

I am only using the OA 4 at present but I have only once used the maximum bitrate, I think it does about 44mbit and I then lower that at the time of encoding to about 26mbit, the reason is that the 4k/60 file size for around 30 mins of video drops right down from 18.2GB est to 5.5GB est and I don't see any issues with my videos at 44mbit or 26mbit, have a look for yourself, this one is an overcast day so not the brightest FYI, it takes many hours to encode on this machine hence the much lower bitrate used. If I used the maximum bitrate I am fairly certain that it would take a full day to encode, an hour long video took about 7hrs and that was at only 20mbits at 8.9GB. I am sure pixel peepers with 4K tv's can notice a difference but i can't see out bad on my 55" 1080 tv.

They are asking for the wrong thing to be fixed. Tweaking the encoding algorithm to improve the image without having to increase the bitrate is a far better outcome.
But thanks to YT everyone is currently an instant expert on bitrate.

It’s probably the viewing devices that has people seeing all sorts of things. It wasn’t until I got a 65" QLED TV that I started to notice poor broadcast quality, jitter, bit rates breaking up on IPlayer/ITVX etc. The contrast range is insanely wide and HDR almost makes your eyes bleed! It’s probably better than my eyesight…..
So the cameras are possibly having to catch up with the displays because people are probably noticing a lot more these days. It’s not so much people ‘pixel peeping’ I think, but people with very large, 4K sharp displays where all kinds of things really start to show.
My pet hate (along with picture breakup/blocking with bitrates) is low frame rate judder. It looks horrible on a QLED and SO obvious. You don’t have to be an expert to see that something doesn’t look quite right on them and that might be part of the problem.
Camera manufacturers are in a more demanding environment than they ever have been.

I have learned from this Forum that people have no idea of encoding algorithm or what bitrate is or image quality or RAW or exposure or pixel size or cpu behind everything or what ever..
I have already let my hands down and reading nonsense texts here. This cannot be saved.

In theory, you're right. But... do you really think that DJI has managed to improve the h265 in a way that no one else has yet? So a kind of h266?
I don't think that's the case.

Perhaps something got lost in the translation, but if you have learned from this forum, and the people in this forum have no idea, then it begs the question.. What have you actually learned??
Like in any multicultural forums, you have the good, the bad and the ugly...
in addition to the bit rate option issue there is a bad audio sync issue where the audio drifts from the video over the course of long recordings.
At 4k30 it started to drift about 3 files in. That's just letting it go with a big SD card. First file was ok, 2nd was getting iffy and by the 3rd it was a couple of seconds off.

Eyy, we are not experts on bitrate. But we listen to the experts and is what they said. Instead of telling us we are wrong. Just add some knowledge.... or are you just here to tell us you know more than us without any demonstration?
I bought the Osman Action 5 Pro today and hope to get it in the next few days so I can test it out extensively. I previously had the GoPro Hero 12 and wasn't really happy with the video footage I received in 4K 50 or 60 FPS because I mainly shoot in dark areas. I also have the Mini 4 Pro and the Osmo Pocket 3 and I have to say I was more than impressed with the image quality of both products. So I decided to buy the Osmo Action 5 Pro after all. Since I record everything in d-log m anyway and color grade afterwards, the driving problems mentioned in various forums are probably less of a problem for me. However, I will check to see if the problem with the frame rate is really as severe and significant as has been described in some videos and forums. It is actually strange that videos are uploaded to YouTube at 40 or 45 Mbit and there are no artifacts, but when creating videos with the action cam in 4K 60, 130 Mbit would be desirable. So I can imagine that a better algorithm could lead to better results there, if it works correctly. Overall, I am excited to see what awaits me there next week at the latest. If the camera really does tend to produce artifacts and the low bitrate is really a problem, then I will have to think about what I am going to do anyway, because there is no way I am going back to GoPro, even if it produced excellent shots in sunlight and good weather.
Today I tested for first time my new brand Osmo Action 5 Pro. I upgraded firmware, configured as people recomend. I Filmed in 4K 60FPS. When it arrived the night, I could continue recording and I have to say.. .it is very impressive the low light performance. Is more or less perfect!
But the very worrying part comes on the day. I've been looking carefully on the footage and it has a lack of detail... horrible... I compared with my video with Go Pro 7 recorded in 2,7K 60FPS. They were perfect! The detail was that good that it feels super good looking the vidoes. But this Osmo Action 5 Pro is like a cheap camera, I don't understand! Also yesterday I was looking some comparisons between Osmo Action 4 and Go Pro 12. And it happens the same...
So I am not sure this is a problem in the 5. I think maybe DJI never had the enough level to compete with Go Pro. I don't understand how people is talking so good about it...
Well the software, the fast and smooth and wathever is super cool. But at the end the video is bad. So, DJI wake up!
I will do some more tests in case I did something wrong... I had the texture and noise reduction to -2 because I saw recommended in a lot of places but...

So saying all that would seriously help if you posted a video and let us know camera settings. Like 60fps 4k is great but you will get full DR if you record 4k 30fps or less. Can you post ?
I recently watched some videos on camera settings, and I was particularly amazed when the presenter demonstrated the ISO options of 100-200 and 100-400 available on his device. It got me wondering if I might be missing a firmware update, even though the DJI Mimo app confirms that I have the latest version.
If this isn't a firmware issue, DJI, we really need these additional ISO ranges in the next firmware update as a priority. The current 100-800 ISO setting feels far too limited.
Additionally, the bitrate issue needs serious attention. It impacts image quality, which is critical for those of us using the Osmo Action 5 Pro. Buyers of this camera aren’t worried about managing large file sizes, but they are definitely concerned about compromised image quality caused by a low bitrate. DJI, this is a major concern, and we need that firmware update as soon as possible!

Hello,
I don't understand why you tell me about problem with 4K 60FPS. Are you serious is a problem? Because to have a good speed sensation with the bike is imperative more than 30 FPS.
Settings:
Auto exposure
AWB
Normal 8Bit
4K 60 FPS
RockSteady
Ultrawide
Texture -2
Noise Reduction -2
You can download here some examples. It is true that is on the afternoon without direct sun light, but it is Barcelona, we still have a lot of light, you will see in the GoPro 7 video that even in low light on the sunset or after is doing well.
An example of one of my videos with GoPro 7:
*No edition on the colors or wathever, just upscaled from 2,7K to 4K in order to make to youtube to use the best encode.
https://youtu.be/jabAwUqmsCg?si=mHUH_uJ5U9NrswtQ
My next test will be with more sunlight and Texture and Noise Reduction to 0.
PD: I actually record with my Google Pixel 7 Pro in 4k 60 FPS. It has a spectacular result. So don't tell me about a lower FPS than 60 when the camera is suposed to do 120HZ.

Apparently my system doesn’t have a codec to decode the A5 VIDEO. I Did watch some of the other video on GP7 and it’s no better than any footage ive seen on an action camera. If thats what you’re looking for then you should be easily able to achieve that on the action 5.
Also I knew nothing about a bike when I said shoot 4k 30 or less rather I was just explaining that full dynamic range works better in 4k 30 or below. I also think you can easily achieve great footage at 4k 30 on a bike even upping the SS to 120 or just shoot auto. Lots of FPV flyers use 4k30.
I don't understand why you tell me about problem with 4K 60FPS. Are you serious is a problem? Because to have a good speed sensation with the bike is imperative more than 30 FPS.
I watched the 0008 and 0009 clip, the color seems to be off and looking flat. Now regarding the hero7 it is still a good action camera today, in low light it is almost the same as their latest lineup(hero11-hero13) since it has a larger pixel size (1.5um vs 1.12um) IIRC.
