Some feedback on why they might be doing it.

When a whale slaps its fins on the water, it's called pectoral fin slapping or "pec slapping". This behavior is a way for whales to communicate with each other.


Why whales slap their fins
Communication: Whales may slap their fins to communicate their location, attract mates, or warn off competitors
Flirting: Female whales may slap their fins to attract male whales
Showing strength: Male whales may slap their fins to show off their strength to attract females or ward off competitors
