I was disappointed to see when I got the Air 3S that it has the same issues as the Mini 4 Pro regarding this indicator.  If you place the controller in the center, the compass is very erratic.  If you put the drone in the center instead, it calms down, but in most instances, the controller icon get hidden behind the home point,

Furthermore, I have seen on many occasions that even if I point the antennas directly towards the drone (or parallell), you do not necesarily get a green icon.  I must admit that it does not seem to affect the connection as such (even on long distance. I have tried both antennas parallell downside and upside against the drone, and also pointing the ends directly at the drone, but the result is unclear what is the best.  The only thing I have discovered is that you almost have to find the green zone and then put the controller down to keep it green.

It is definitley room for improvement.

In my frustration, I made this video:

Try a compass calibration at your RC only, see if improves.
Do not hold metal things around the RC or your phone with BTH and Wifi, will influence the behaviour.

Cheers.

Thank you for good suggestions, but I have of course tried all of this, even many RC 2 compass calibrations (on both RC 2's). It really does not make any change at all.

When I first got my Mini 4 for about one year ago, this was not a problem, but after an update both myself and many others experienced this problem. It was meant to have been solved later (and looked to be a little bit better), but the issue was still present, and for the Air 3S it had the problem from day one (no surprise, as the firmware should be the same on both RC 2's.  I have several handheld compasses (due to my orienteering hobby), and none of these behaves this way (at the same positions). There is no reason for why the RC 2 compass should be that erratic. This must be a firmware issue.

Up until now, I have just ignored it (by putting the drone in the centre of the compass indicator), but I prefer to have the drone icon in the centre because it is easier to find the drone position that way.  In any case the most important thing is the transmission quality, and as long as I have a white icon and all bars full (and it does not interfere with my flights), it is not a huge issue, but still it is annoying and something that should be rectified).
