what the keck do these points get you when you comment on threads and post stuff?

One thing it does is you get a higher DJI forum group rating allowing you more forum "privileges".  

I looked at the whole "prestige" system and didn't quite get it.

There might be privileges in the future, but none yet that are noticable. DJI claimed to (perhaps) convert the points into some kind of credit for the dji store.

If DJI converted the points into credit for the DJI store.  People would be posting many, many more times here to just jump the credit.  Bad idea.  Good idea would be to be able to have delete privileges to get rid of spam.
