While on a road trip thru Namibia earlier this year with my Mavic Pro, there were several times where I wanted to get footage of our SUV driving along the roads there and the beautiful scenery all around. I did stop a few times, but needed to keep on schedule and didn’t have a lot of time to get out, set up the drone, have my wife drive the SUV while I filmed, and then come back to pick me up. The idea is to have a pod of some sort that attaches to a roof rack, lets you launch the drone from inside the vehicle and set it up to follow and record while you drive along, and then it could land back onto the roof. For takeoff and landing the vehicle would be stopped. It would also make sense to not have the drone ride on the roof as there could be dust or rain, so the drone could be set on the roof for takeoff, set into follow-me mode while driving, and then returns back to its home port on the roof, where you would retrieve it. Ideally it would be small enough to allow for packing it in luggage for flights. Is this a crazy idea and not practical? Or do folks just fly their drones from inside a vehicle while it’s driving? I do that on my sailboat, but haven’t tried it while in a car. I have heard of some regulations that don’t allow flying a drone from a moving vehicle, so this wouldn’t work everywhere. Thoughts anyone?
