I think the cable you have should do the job properly connecting it the only way you can - straight  end in remote, and 90deg. end to your phone.

I'm betting your phone isn't seeing the remote as anything other than a charging source... so you need to tell it to look at it a different way.

White Ox,
I have watched the video and tried what you mentioned.
The only options I can choose are "PTP"  or  "MTP".
"MDI" is not an option.
Furthermore; I cannot even get the USB options to avail themselves when the cable is plugged into the RC.
I have to use a USB cable in a computer or other device to bring up the possible options.
This tells me it is not recognizing the RC as a DATA device, at all.
So I used the cable in something else, chose the different settings, then switched the cable. However it beeps as soon as the cable is changed and the options dissapear. Which menas I do not know what option it may / or may not have changed to.
However my "charging indicator" goes on when my S4 is tethered to the RC, therefore the phone is thinking it is a charging device. Just not DATA.
Any other ideas?I have ordered the other cable. Don't know if that will resolve this, at all.

I wonder if the current cable is OTG? If so it would likely be labeled as such.

So you clicked the "Build Number" 7 times to give you access to the "Developer Options" page.

Once you open the Developer Options Page, did you Turn Developer Options On? - it's the toggle in the upper right - shown clearly @ 0:32 in the following Video:

Yes. My screen is different however "Developer Options"  is "On" (it is a new listing in the settings screen. Also, under "Debugging" ... "USB Debugging" is activated.
Still no connection detected when I start the Spark Go 4 software. It does not open on it's own. however I get connection, fine with WiFi turned on.

Last question.....

Is your phone already in Airplane Mode when you are on the developer settings options?  I just checked on 6.0.1 (which is what I have), and with airplane mode on, I can see see Midi, but when I select it, it doesn't take.  If I turn airplane mode OFF, then I can select Midi, and it takes....

I do not have DJI Go 4 in the list of apps to be debugged - you shouldn't need it either.

I haven't scrolled back, do you get a charge indicator on your battery when you plug your phone into the RC (with the RC already on and paired with your mavic)? If not, then you likely have a bad cable - and this would be why you don't get any notification of it being plugged in at all.

If you do get the charge indicator, go ahead and click on the option to Revoke debugging Authorizations in your screen from the screenshot above. Great thinking on posting that - makes this communication thing easier. haha.
Once cleared, unplug count to 5, and re-plug - see if you get any notifications then.

It does not have to be your last question. I find it very kind of you to be trying ot assist me. Ask anything you want.
No, my phone is not in "Airplane mode".
I do not see a "MIDI" as an option at all.
Remember this is a cell phone, not a tablet. Perhaps that is one reason. Also, it might be that was not an option in Android 5.0.1
I can only choose "PTP" or "MTP", and that will only present itself, if the phone senses a possible DATA connection.

Yes, teh charge indicator goes on. It does this whether the Spark is linked to the RC or not. I alwasy get the Charge indicator when cabeling between the RC and phone, with the RC on.

I tried the method you outlined. The only notification is the beep and charge indicator, except a brief, unrelated blurb that states the charge is slow due to it not being a correct device.
No options accessible about MIDI etc.

I guess I assumed that the spark shipped with an OTG cable, otherwise, what's the point of putting the micro to micro cable in the box - to charge your phone while you talk to it via wifi?

I honestly don't know if the supplied cable is OTG or not... I bought my spark used and the previous owner told me he had used Wifi.  He purchased it prior to DJI officially supporting OTG for the Spark, so I bought my own OTG cable.  I even have a spare you could  borrow......

Yes, an OTG cable is required to connect the RC to the Phone and have data flow between them.

"or are you saying to downgrade the Spark Go 4 application?"

Because your phone is on Droid 5, I'd try older Go4 Versions!

S-e-ven,
I could not do the Android OS downgrade you mention. As I need to use the cell phone for other purposes also. It is not just dedicated for the drone. I have other software on the phone that needs this OS.

If you go to "Settings", "Apps",  "DJI Go 4", then look to the upper left, under the icon for the app, can you tell me what version it's listed as?

I SERIOUSLY doubt that you'll get 4.3.4 to run on any many devices...that were new in 2013.... I've got a 2013 Nexus 7 that's all hopped up on steroids and I feel I;m pushing it to it's limits to get it to run 4.3.2.

I hate to say it, but I think S-e-ven was right, downgrading seems like the obvious choice.  However, with 4.1.15, I think that OTG was not "officially" supported, and you have to hold your tongue just right, do this and that in the right order, all while doing the pee-pee dance around an open fire and singing coum-bye-yah.  Ok, it's not that bad, haha - but you do need to connect things at the right time and in the right order.

With my Nexus project, I verified all worked using 4.1.15 and I knew that if any versions after this one didn't work correctly, I could backtrack and have a viable setup.  After some homework, I believe that  4.2.20 was a pretty stable version and included the "official" OTG  for the spark.  I found this version to be very stable for me as well, and not having to look like an idiot  doing the pee-pee dance in the front yard in front of the neighbors was rather refreshing. haha.  Again, I could revert back to this one if future ones didn't work as anticipated.  Now, I'm testing out 4.3.2...and I don't think I'll be pushing it any further.

I'm not in NJ... but not too far from you, I'm up in CT, lol

The adapter you have coming tomorrow will get you the OTG, and give you a larger port you can plug any USB 2.0 to Micro Usb cable into - it's just not the smallest nor tidiest setup - but it will work.  I am using this one:

Try 4.2.21, that one is stabil on Droid 7 and 8 on my devices
And install the modded 4.1.15 2.0 aside every higher version of the go4, you are trying, anyway.
Gets you a working app with benefits PLUS a official one, you can try out

S-e-ven,
I was not trying to imply you were telling me to downgrade the OS. I was confused and did not know. Sorry if it came off that way.
Do you think my Galaxy S5, would do better? I have one I could use.
I also have a cheap tablet.
It is an Azpen A727.All of these run Android.

BTW, since playing around and doing a reboot, I do not seem to have the latency with the camera.  My main reasons for wanting the tether to work:
A)  I have property, extensive. I want the range so I can check up the mountain, maybe close to a mile away, or as far as I can go, reasonably.
B) To conserve battery life, on the phone / tablet. WiFi drains it much faster.
I don't want to buy another phone / tablet, just for the Drone, at this point. Rather use what I already have.

I'll throw my 2 cents in....

I'd not spend any time on the Tablet - unless modified, it's still running Jellybean OS, is a dual core processor, and just isn't up to the task.

The Galaxy S5 beats the Galaxy S3 in every important category - if you have one of those to use, I'd pick it up prior to the S3.

Comparison Link

I went ahead and loaded up Go 4 Mod 2.0.... Gotta do some testing with it, but since it's based off of a solid version, I can't see there being too many hiccups.

No!
Just stop google play from upgrading the Go4
Or get the Go4 mod 2.0, which can be installed aside a newer version
4.1.15 I'd suggest max for the S4 and also as starting point for the S5.
Just 2 GB Ram, Droid 6, not sure the 4.2.21 will be performing well.
But in case the 4.1.15 works, testing is just another installing!

^ What he said ^
Not sure where I got the idea you had an S3... dagnabbit, sorry about that.

My testing primarily consists of how quickly the screen refreshes - I want as little latency as possible.  If I yaw the drone, the camera should update practically immediately.

I won't do a wifi setup - as you noted earlier, it just burns through the battery quicker. and in my mind, yet another thing to fail.  OTG for Me, Yay!

Tethering - yes, I know that works and I can make it work well - I used to have a totally customized Nexus 7 2013 (probably 200plus hours in setup time)  in my Ford Superduty for monitoring practically everything, as well as have navigation, pandora, and everything else one gets on a tablet - until someone stole it.  The nice thing about tethering for this application, is one only needs it to update the map for your flying area - prior to take off - then you can shut the wifi down.

Yep, I ordered it on Thursday. It was supposed to ship on Thursday, I paid extra for that. It was due to be delivered on Friday.
Then I see the Fedex site shows a delivery date of Saturday (today), and that it was picked up Friday afternoon.
Don't know if seller failed to ship when they were suppposed to or if, due to the snowstorm, the pickup and delivery were delayed.
I feel like a kid... I can't wait to play with the new toy... Waaaaah,   waaaaaah, I'm going to stamp my feet & hold my breath till I turn blue.
I will keep you folks advised, as soon as I know anything.
Will it arrive this morning?  This afternoon? This evening? Tonight? Shall I stand at the door? Did it get left at the door and I did not know yet? Should I look again?
Wait I heard a noise....is that the truck? Oh, it was the wind blowing....darn  :-)

Cable arrived!!!!
I rushed to unpack.
Reread the steps you outlined, as far as order of operations.
Even went back in and made sure USB debugging was active.
Rebooted phone.
Checked again.
And the answer is
UGH! Nope! Notta! Negative, The null set, or as they say in some places "You can't get there from here".
When I'm done crying, I'll try something else.
I'm gonna go eat some worms :-(
To put it plain. With this cable, no change at all.
BTW I hooked the cable up to the OTG cable up to the RC, with a good DATA cable from the OTB to the S4 phone.

I must be dumb...
I must be technilogically challenged...
I must not know how to understand written instructions...
I must not be able to comprehend video instructions..
Yes, it must be me.
Now all those IT people I taught, wrote up procedures for, wrote up technical documentation for... they must have received all that from my former self.
Because I followed the manual and screen and it still took me a rediculous time to calibrate the IMU. I had to find another video to realize it was waiting for me.
Well if I'm not on this site later, it will be due to me riding around on the little bus.
Now, did a test flight. With the tethering attached but I knew it was not working. The vcamera delay to the  Spark was so bad I could not tell where it was by the video feed. I had to keep it in line of sight. Unable to know what I was taking pictures of.
I must get the tethering to work.
I can't use the S5 yet. It is not avaialbe, as my friend needed to use it.
OK, White Ox, how far to your place?
