I SERIOUSLY doubt that you'll get 4.3.4 to run on any many devices...that were new in 2013.... I've got a 2013 Nexus 7 that's all hopped up on steroids and I feel I;m pushing it to it's limits to get it to run 4.3.2.
I hate to say it, but I think S-e-ven was right, downgrading seems like the obvious choice. However, with 4.1.15, I think that OTG was not "officially" supported, and you have to hold your tongue just right, do this and that in the right order, all while doing the pee-pee dance around an open fire and singing coum-bye-yah. Ok, it's not that bad, haha - but you do need to connect things at the right time and in the right order.
With my Nexus project, I verified all worked using 4.1.15 and I knew that if any versions after this one didn't work correctly, I could backtrack and have a viable setup. After some homework, I believe that 4.2.20 was a pretty stable version and included the "official" OTG for the spark. I found this version to be very stable for me as well, and not having to look like an idiot doing the pee-pee dance in the front yard in front of the neighbors was rather refreshing. haha. Again, I could revert back to this one if future ones didn't work as anticipated. Now, I'm testing out 4.3.2...and I don't think I'll be pushing it any further.
I'm not in NJ... but not too far from you, I'm up in CT, lol
The adapter you have coming tomorrow will get you the OTG, and give you a larger port you can plug any USB 2.0 to Micro Usb cable into - it's just not the smallest nor tidiest setup - but it will work. I am using this one:
