It's a hot potato politically. The necessary repairs could have been completed in four weeks, had it not been for the fact that the bridge is a Listed Structure (protected status) and so the work is far more complicated to preserve its appearance. Hence it will take three times as long. Sand-blasting the steelwork will preclude any kind of access. An asphalt footpath detouring through the local park has already been laid so that pupils from the "wrong" side of the divide can get to school.
It's bureaucratic madness which will cost extra millions of pounds, potentially ruin some local businesses, and cause headaches for commuters for months.
Some of my projects are listed historic structures, which requires significant additional review and cost for work to preserve aesthetic features. It seems bureaucracy translates pretty evenly, then. |
