In the past, ammunition relied on black powder to act as the propellant for the shell. However, most ammunition today is made with smokeless powder, capable of lasting considerably longer. Brass is less susceptible to corrosion so I always avoid steel cased ammunition. Most manufacturers guarantee that their ammunition will last for at least a decade. So yes there is an expiration date. However, there are many stories of military surplus ammo being used for decades after it was manufactured.
I rotate my bulk of target practice ammo using oldest first. For my concealed carry weapon I rotate it out every 3 months and expend it on the range at targets. As the concealed carry ammo is exposed to the elements (and not stored in a climate controlled gun closet), indentations from the bullet feed ramp and extra lubrication picked up from regularly cleaning the gun could cause issues down the line. So for safety I just rotate it out and put in new shells. |
