Hello, Inspire People-

I just wanted to add myself to the list of owners who had problems with firmware V1.9.1.10

I have an Inspire 1 with the M3 camera.  I live in a remote area with pay by the gigabyte expensive, poorly functioning internet so I was a bit behind on my firmware updates.

My DJI Go App was showing out of date:
Battery
Aircraft
Camera
Remote Control

I updated the aircraft from V1.4 to V1.8.1.00 to V1.9.1.10  - this apparently updated the camera and battery simultaneously
I updated the controller to 1.6.0

I calibrated my IMU, sticks and compass, and launched my aircraft manually to about 8 feet high. The landing gear lifted but the aircraft kept going up even while I was off the controls.  I easily fought back the vertical acceleration by holding down on the left stick and tried to put the aircraft down.  I brought the craft down, with the camera within inches of the ground and the landing gear stayed up.  I flipped the landing gear switch and lowered the gear.  I was now hovering at about 3 feet and wanted to see how the aircraft would behave.  Staying off the controls, the aircraft lowered itself onto the lawn keeping the props spinning full speed (it wasn’t trying to auto land).  I shut it down.  In a hover, the aircraft never seemed to lock onto the ground and was moving around as if I was trying to keep it steady in a wind while flying it on Atti mode.  I assumed something was wrong with the VPS and the landing gear.

I hadn’t seen this thread so I:
Reloaded V1.9.1.10 – This didn’t fix the VPS or gear problems.
Reloaded V1.8.1.00 then reloaded V1.9.1.10 – This didn’t fix the VPS or gear problems

At this point, I figured I was going crazy and that these problems were due to my own incompetence and the 20kt winds I was testing in.  So, I turned to the internet and found this thread.

I reloaded V1.8.1.00 and the aircraft flew as is should – landing gear raised and lowered a few feet off the ground, and the 20kt winds didn’t budge the craft in a hover.

Sorry for the long essay.

Moral of the story: I should have stopped at firmware V1.8.1.00

I have an Inspire 1 with the M3 camera. Upgraded from V1.8.1.00 to V1.9.1.10 Exact same bad characteristics as every one else who is reporting problems with new V1.9.1.10 . Down graded back to V1.8.1.00 . VPS seems to be reporting incorrect altitude. If I put Inspire in Travel Mode then take it back out the VPS works for a few flights then starts to report incorrect altitude again. This started when I upgraded firmware to V1.8.1.00 when it was first released...

Ouch!!! Rich! But it's easy to happen, I know very well myself I was going to a soccer field close to my home for testing last year, and when I got there I noted that I forgot the batteries... Luckily it was just a kilometer to home, so I quickly went home and got them.

But glad you got some fine flying with the P4, it's a nice machine, too

I just installed the new firmware that got released, hope the weather gets better. It's been windy and rainy all the week.

Happy flying, mate!

Hi Rob,

Would you please let me know what are the aircraft version and camera version shown on the About page in the DJI GO App after your upgrade with FW v1.09.01.30?

It seems to me that the Aircraft and Camera versions printed in the Inspire 1 Pro Release Notes announced by DJI on today are different from what I actually found in my case.

1.9.1.30 Firmware for Inspire 1 Series

Thanks in advance.

Hi Henry

I updated my Inspire 1 V2X3 and get thecamera version 1.8.1.00.  The "+" means the DJI servers has not updated yet. It looks like I may have a VPS problem on my Inspire 1. After recalibration I am seeing a - 0.3 (red) when the aircraft is on the ground. I need someone at DJI to confirm if this is a problem.

Hi Henry,

How are you doing?  I flew 2 times today ... yah I remembered the batteries . I still get the feeling my Inspire sinks when put in a low hover. Are you sure your VPS is reading (red -0.1m) can you switch it to English measurement and see if you get - 0.3)?   I did not worry about it before and now I fly thinking about it when I put the Inspire in a hover far away from me...

Thanks man

Hi Rich,

Mine gave a reading in Red 0.1M (but not in Red -0.1M). When I set my DJI GO App to report Imperial units, it gave a reading in Red 0.3 FT, exactly the same as in your case as shown in the screen shot in post #315. This reading was accurately reflecting the fact that the VPS sensor was about 4 inches off the ground.

It is my understanding that any VPS reading less than 1 FT (or 1M) will be shown in Red in the DJI GO App to warn flyer that the bird is close to the ground. It does not mean reading of negative figure (i.e. below ground), which is impossible for a VPS sonar sensor to attain such a reading.

It is only when the aircraft flies to such a location (e.g. below a cliff the crest of which is the home point) where the toe of the cliff is far below beyond the VPS sonar sensor's readable distance, then the flight controller of the aircraft will compare the current barometer reading against the barometer reading at home point before the aircraft took off and gives a negative altitude reading of, say -20 FT.

When I hand-raising the bird gradually up from the ground, I saw the reading increasing from Red 0.3, 0.4,...0.9, than change to White 1.0, 1.1, ...... and beyond.

It appears to me that the VPS reading of yours was normal.

Hope the above explanation helps.

Henry

Dear Henry,

Great explanation and thank you for taking the time with this question. I understand now and guess I was trying to find the reason why my Inspire would starting sinking while in a steady hover.  While flying over the river I was nervous and did not want to take my eyes off the Inspire (normally I would look at the iPad to frame the shot).  So I have the link to yesterdays flight on the new FW (quick edit)

Thanks man!!

Hi Rich,

I like the landing pad at the end of the video

You mentioned on 1 July you encountered uncommanded sinking when hovering at about 10 FT. Please note that according the I1 Pro specifications the operating range of the VPS is only up to 9.84 FT. It appears to me that the uncommanded sinking when hovering was not relating to the VPS, but relating to other factor(s).

Have you done your compass dance in an interference-free environment?
Was it a calm day when you encounter this?

Please also note that barometer readings alone are not so precise. The hovering accuracy with GPS signals alone is also not so precise. The Flight Controller in the aircraft needs to gather all such data from sensors of GPS, barometers, IMU, compass, VPS (if applicable), & from stick commands (not in your case) to determine the controlling signals to the 4 ESCs for the aircraft to hover. It is a complicate process. If any one of the sensor data changed (e.g. change in air pressure due to gust of wind), the aircraft altitude can change during hovering.

Keep watching out, and happy flying!

Hi Henry,
Yes, this is good information and understand the aircraft is relying on many things to hold position. I have calibrated the compass onsite before flying. The IMU was calibrated in a controlled environment before leaving. Yes, there is wind around the river and on the shore. (not calm) As long as I have been flying, this seems to be a problem that has not be noticed before. I will watch this more carefully and enjoy flying as much as I can.
PS the landing pad is made by HoodMan and this is the 3 foot pad!! Just big enough for the Inspire 1. They also have the 5 foot version ($130).... I think it is very nice to have when flying in areas in the mountains and rivers. Most likely will use this at the coast (beach) to keep it out of the sand.

I wouldn't use a landing pad made out of carpet or material or anything flimsy.  I seen a UAV once come down and about 5 inches off the ground the piece of carpet they were using simply lifted up and wrapped itself over one of the engines causing the UAV to thrash around on the ground smashing it itself to pieces.

If you using an landing Pad and I do virtually every flight use a piece of rigid board such as plywood or MDF.

GB, Understood and no problem.

These Landing pads are not cheap by any means. I am using the 3 foot landing pad and the cable used is 5 lbs. The 5 foot landing pad is 11lbs and the 12 foot pad is 36lbs. So no worries about these blowing around from the prop wash.

Rich,

I just use a piece of MDF rigid board 900mm diameter, with a 25mm hole in the centre which makes it easier to carry and transport.  No problems and works a treat, at least you can always ensure you have a level landing area where the camera and payload won get damaged by uneven ground etc.  Essential piece of kit in my opinion unless you are willing to take a chance on finding a suitable landing and take-off location.
