After receiving the DJI FPV RC3 yesterday it was finally time to brave it and take my next big step into FPV - flying the Avata 2 in manual flight mode for the first time. This is actually the very first time I have ever flown a drone manually and only three weeks after getting the Avata 2 wearing goggles for the first time. I kept the attitude limit on for obvious reasons as this is all new to me but pleased I did two full batteries in manual and without crashing! Great fun and easier than the sim. Lot's to do to make it all click but a great start! Could have been a lot worse!
Footage taken directly from the goggles (1080p) to show speeds and distances for those interested and a big thank you to those who have provided sound advice and encouragement over the past 3 weeks in helping me to take the plunge - especially DAFlys and DowntownRDB and a host of youtubers!

Thanks DA - I won't lie - I was a little nervous at times but so pleased I've taken the step. Hard but easier than I thought. I was prepared to crash today!

Great! I am not confident enough so I'm still taking some simulator time.

BTW you do have a really big garden

Take as much time as you need - you have nothing to prove and a drone to lose if you rush it so do it when you feel the time is right. I only intended to test it out today then resume n/s mode but I kind of took to it and once I gained my focus and composure it started to click very quickly so I did two full batteries in manual and never crashed. Obviously a long way to go but glad I did it and started the next step.

My best M mode achievement is a simple ascent/descent. But I went straight back to S mode after less than 20sec.

At least you did it
Enable attitude limit in manual within the controller settings menu. Take the drone up to around 250' AGL in a light wind and empty field with no flight restrictions. Change to Manual mode, pitch the camera at 10 degrees so you fly slowly to start with then align the throttle stick to initiate manual and just take it from there making sure you balance both sticks in all 4 directions with micro adjustments and if you panic or think you're about to crash then press the pause button and the drone will instantly switch to normal and put the drone in a safe and stable hover.  Then fly back up and do it again and again until you are comfortable. You can not spin out of control with the attitude limited so it makes things easier to start with. No rush, no pressure but when you're ready you've got to at least try. Don't sit in the sim too long as trust me, it's not the same in the real world. And it's best to take off and land in normal and only switch to manual when high up so if things go wrong you have time to react with that all important pause button.

I can understand that.
I would be super scared to lose the drone when I would fly low and fast like some do.

That will come later - high and slow to start and with your finger on the pause button or you will crash.

I had a nice rhythm a couple of weeks ago here on the forum. Because of the big DIY job, I had to catch up about 2 months..... I did 2 or 3 days per day for some time and almost made it to the present time.
And then the busy times at work kicked in

Now that's what I call a very successful first manual flight.  That prep time and sim time really paid off but nothing beats the actual flying a gaining confidence.  Keep it up AJ.

Thanks Rich. I planned doing so many flights with the RC3 then do more time in the sim etc etc but when I was out today in light winds with a beautiful blue sky it just felt right to at least test it. I expected to nose dive into the ground as soon as I switched over but I was pleasantly surprised. Clearly not as fluid as flying with my motion controller but this is far more complex and with mastering that complexity I will can take the hobby to the next level and beyond what the motion controller can offer. That's the aim anyway lol

Projects like that are never predictable and will surely have countless set backs. I'm guessing the key is to have contingencies to compensate when that happens

You're spot on.  I think the whole reason for the MC3 was to make it easier for newbies.  If you wanted to do real acro you would need the RC3.  Just my thoughts and I could be wrong as I sometimes am.

Indeed. We had a couple, but the main thing holding me back was the paying job.
But that's ok. We knew this was Plan B

No, your perfectly right mate - that's it in a nutshell. Although a 3" GPS ready-to-fly cinewhoop isn't really designed for freestyle FPV but it can be done. And I can also see the MC3 being used by experienced pilots as offering a different style to flying to that of the RC3 which, outside of manual mode, feels like flying a Mavic which is not why I bought the Avata.
