I've found them to be quite unbreakable after you invest a bit into a few key upgrades like RPM arms and steel axles

Yes, that's definitely a needed upgrade.

Video wasn't showing in my previous reply so trying again:

I'm so looking forward to my son being skilled enough to record this in FPV using Avata 2

Wow, definitely the need for speed and fun.  Don't rush him to much as he'll then take away those toys.

He has his own Slash Ultimate that he painted the body for himself, so he's not trying to steal my Rustler

How do you end up having to replace a motor? That's one thing I never managed in an RC car Gears breaking is usually just a side effect of bad setup (wrong mesh, over-tightened slipper etc.) Did you give up on Traxxas or RC in general?

Gave up Traxxas in general. One too many collisions. I was plagued with the 1/16 Slash.  Fun while it lasted. The gears were cheap plastic from the factory.

That’s a bit like giving up on DJI because you didn’t like Tello, especially since you probably had the brushed version which is overweight, underpowered and top-heavy

Their 1/16 platform is quite outdated in general, but with a few minor upgrades it's some of the best fun my son and I have had and we’ve sent the 1/16 E-Revo on some insane jumps too and probably broke like 3 spur gears total in 4 years. And they’re like 3€ to replace.

I'm still hoping to repair it at some point. I had the 1/16 E-Revo also, and irreparably damaged it some months later. For the Slash, I got metal gears later on.

Nothing is ever irreparably damaged if every single part of it is available to buy in any RC shop in the world

Front part of what? It's all just cheap plastics, the most expensive parts are between 16-20€

The E-Revo. Not even the shop wanted to try. Lots of shattering.

Absolutely. He already has some acro practice in various FPV simulators, I'm just waiting for him to ask to go into M mode himself, don't wanna push him.

Hahaha, there’ll always be some new kids who are better than you at anything

As long as you don't take it as a serious competition and just treat it as a fun hobby, it’s fine … unless you're into racing, then definitely just quit

Thankfully racing isn't my thing. I love flying acro though!!!

It's funny though looking at some of these kids flying acro at 2 or 3 years old but probably still need help tying their shoes!!! LOL!!!

Honestly, I don't think I'll ever give up flying FPV....I know I'll never be the best but as long as I keep seeing improvement....I'll keep going!!!!

Yeah, I've personally peaked about 3 years ago (I just realised I was investing too much time and money so scaled down a bit), but it's still fun.

4y/o...impressive, humbling, I quit

FPV2, just a hope or something in development?  UAS, relative to many other recreations isn't really that expensive.  At least for those who don't crash on a regular basis.  My problem is crashing.  Up to 4 with the Avata2.   Damage has been one broken prop. Good thing I don't have the RC3 with manual option. Even then relative to other hobbies the cost/year are reasonable. Last year there was a list at the SnowBrains webpage of areas with the most expensive alpine prime time daily lift pass in the USA.  All over $200.  Most expensive just  short of $300. Personally  in terms of value.  Time with your son, pure fun.  FPV2 or another Avata2 combo kit would be my choice over 4-6 days at the pricey ski area.

100% agree about cost/fun ratio, and I hope FPV 2 is real and coming soon as I would love to have something that's as convenient as Avata series but a bit more wind-resistant. But I'm probably gonna have to get another Avata 2 anyway since that will allow us to bump into each other
