Running the battery down to 0% is really bad for the battery health and not great for safety.,  it's always best to plan to land with some reserve incase something happens.

True what you are saying.

But he was flying closeby in free area, so imo hardly any safety issues in his flight.
Flying circles next to HP at 5% -0% is good fun....

And yes, sometimes nice to land at 1 % battery....mayby not good for batteries but my batteries are stilld doing great, and you can always buy new battery ;-)

cheers

From a safety perspective you never know what could happen,   he was flying by/from a road,    for all we know a large crowd of ramblers could appear and then he'd have no where save to land during a forced landing whilst they passed.    Ive had occasion myself to have to hover for a bit to let animals and people pass before I could land,  and really thats only one suggestion of what could happen.   there are so many unknown unknowns out there.

If the goal is to score a new record, you can fly on a field at a low altitude until the battery is almost empty. But usually I start the landing process when the battery is at 20%.

Ok

The field where i fly is a private farmers field, there is no chance of ramblers turning up en mass, i have flown here over 100 times or more in 10 years of testing apps, quads etc so i know its a good place to test.

No not setting a record as such, i just wanted to see if the elusive full flight time that DJI have promised is obtainable.

As for flying to zero percent, ive had a number of quads starting with a P2 vision and regularly fly to zero when testing flight time, i have yet to have a battery fail from doing so on a few occasions, I do believe that DJI say that even at zero percent there is still enough of a safe voltage in the batteries.

It can be done but, as in your example, you have to fly the drone until 0% battery.  That is what DJI does in their maximum flight time tests (also performed in windless conditions at a steady speed while NOT recording).

In your case it looks like you were running a test circuit over an open field where the drone could be easily retrieved if the battery level dropped to the point of a forced landing.   During general flight staying airborne until 0% would entail a strong possibility of a difficult recovery or even total loss of the drone.
