my order held up by customs UPS never notified me what a mess!

My order has been put into “detention” by US Customs. I only found this out 6 days after seeing it “in warehouse” after what looked like was going to be a fast delivery. Today I received a document from US Customs stating it had been detained… interestingly there was a phone number and I was able to talk to someone in customs. They basically said it was going to be there until “someone in Washington” says ok to release. I guess I am wondering how many other people this is happening to or if I simply won the wrong lottery?
