Sorry for being late to the party but I’ve found a way to solve the activating issue.

Simply, turn your phalange to flight mode. Then, just turn on wifi on your phone.

Connect your phone’s wifi to with the RC (I’d fly more combo) or the drone and open up the DJI go app.

Follow all the instructions (no QR scanning needed) and viola! You can thank me.

Note: you’ll need to flip between your home wifi and the drone/RC wifi SSID during set up. The DJI go app will prompt you. Just follow the steps. It will work.
