Good news - the Canadian Drone laws were just recently updated to be somewhat less draconian, now with a 5.5 km airport restriction and a 1.8 km for helipad only restriction, and less restrictive about people and buildings. This is a good start and shows advocacy is working! Certainly they could be even better but this is a hopeful start.
======= Current updated restrictions (copied from https://www.tc.gc.ca/media/docum ... rone_users_EN_2.pdf )=======
It’s the law! If you fly your drone for fun and it weighs more than 250 g and up to 35 kg, follow these rules. FLYING FOR FUN? RULES FOR RECREATIONAL DRONE USERS

• at least 1.8 km away from heliports or aerodromes used exclusively by helicopters outside of controlled or restricted airspace
• at least 9 km away from a natural hazard or disaster area
• away from areas where it could interfere with police or first responders
