I just ordered a new battery and received it today. When I got it no lights turned on, it appeared to the completely empty.
I thought that LiPO batteries should never be completely drained and preferably stored for long periods of time with at least 50% battery life in them.

Am I missing something here?

The batteries are shipped in a hibernation mode so the electronics in the battery will not drain it. If you charge it, even for a minute, disconnect it and you will see it has about 50 to 80% charge.

When I started charging it, it started with only the first two LEDs lighting up. I thought that meant that the battery would be at a lower charge than 50-80%

That is Ok. Normally level for storage is 30%
