Reinstalled latest buggy firmware and collision avoidance was back.  Reflashed with V02.00.016 and it's gone again.  really weird.

Yes it is correct.
Thanks to Beeper i compare all 3 versions and find that during update, not all the files writes in to the flash.
It's means that v0106 make changes for VPS system, ESC, IMU and some things more, but v0602 make changes for ESC ect.. but not for VPS system. By this problem we have v0602 but with v0106 VPS and some things more.
If my theory is correct, then first need flash 503 and only then 602. Or somehow erase all memory on P4 and do clean flash.

I am not the author. Just find this info in internet, try on my drone and after success post this solution here.
But i still need that anybody who still has original dji firmware below v02.00.0106 and his drone fly great, to make firmware backup and post it for download. Please somebody do it. It will take only 5 min of your time and this is 100% safe for your drone. But this backup will help for 1000+ P4 owners with problems.

I have just tried backing up my firmware (not latest) with DUMLdore but I get an error from the app when it gets to decrypting.  I will possibly get chance to try it on a different PC later.

This problem has been ongoing for over 6 weeks now, so its not exactly new.  There seems 3 basic courses of action:

1.        Provide an approach that makes the current firmware work
2.        Provide newer firmware that works
3.        Provide an approach to downgrade to a former working firmware

So far I see no evidence on #1 or #2.  I don’t see why there is hesitation on #3, which seems like the obvious interim way.

There is a way to enter by the Assistant to programming mode of P4, possibly from there you can enable the VPS and its configuration, it is in the WEB if I find the thread I get it

This might be a stupid question but has everyone checked to see the VPS is turned on in the Go app?

When downgrading to 503 do we need to downgrade the controller firmware as well?

I do not see DJI interest in solving the problem.
We have not been able to fly for 15 days.

It is not possibly downgrade to 1.8. DJI delete this option. But downgrade to 1.6 works well. Also last firmware 1.9 works ok.

Did someone add the 503 firmware? That's the last version one of my batteries worked on, comes up with 'Battery authentication failed' on all later firmware. Would be great to be able to go back to this version.

Because #3 voids the most important part of 2.00.0106. They can force you to update the firmware / NFZ info on the drone.

The most important part of an update...is that is should actually work.  For many it seems to fail that test.  It's a little like the medical world...first do no harm.

WOW you guys are awesome! So to sum up...the thing is we leave the RC of the AC alone with version 1.9.2 that should be fine; then flash the drone with version v01.02.0503 and then do a second flash on top of that with v01.02.0602. That leads as to a fully functional PHANTOM 4 (VPS+OBSTACLE AVOIDANCE AND SO ON) with the best firmware ever (not that v.2 version) Can anyone please confirm all this so that we (the most scared) can proceed with the "procedure"?

THANKS EVERYONE ALSO ICER TO MAKE IT POSSIBLE.

I had all of the same problems mentioned in this thread, but have now downgraded to version 503
on the Phantom 4. On the controller I've kept the version 1.92 and things are now as it should be.
The Phantom now flies perfect and VPS is working 100%
Tried also to chat with DJI support today. Totally waste of time.
However a speciel thanks to Icer and Duchunter. Well done. Thanks again

I've got all my functionality back, I thought I'd put together a concise all in one how I did it for those just starting.

Go to the two firmware files and make sure you change the names of them to dji_system.bin

I suggest you place them in two separate folders named with the version numbers.

Make sure DJI assistant 2 is installed but not running.

Start and plug your P4 into your computer and run DUMLdore.exe, and choose backup firmware.

When finished select Load Firmware and navigate to the V01.02.0503 firmware file you should have renamed dji_system.bin.  Select Flash Firmware and follow the prompts.  You can now follow the progress on DJI assistant 2.

When it's finished I unplugged and restarted the P4, I also shut down DJI assistant2 and DUMLdore.

Repeat this procedure for the V02.00.016 firmware.

If you start with the V02.00.016 firmware you will not have collision avoidance and a very long shutdown from my experience, it needs to be downgraded to V01.02.0503 firmware first and then upgraded to V02.00.016 firmware.

This worked like magic for me, obviously do this at your own risk.  You can always update it back to the terrible buggy latest firmware from DJI but I don't know why anyone would.

Just finished all tests with firmware.
Lot of things and application links already posted here, by this reason i not give some links but just tell very important features...
Yes, downgrade DJI firmware is possible and not only for P4 but also for lot other aircraft models by using same utility.
Before make any actions with your drone, you must make original firmware backup.
To downgrade to v602, you don't need v503. Just make flash 2 times. First time all files get to be replaced according "master cfg file", second time completely all files get flashed.
If you have second battery, you need make flash Nr.3 with same firmware.
Always see on led indicator. On the end of upgrade/downgrade, led indicator get green. During flashing it can be orange or red/green flashing.
Second time then flashing same firmware, this take much less time.
Then battery get flashing you can see two middle lights flashing.
Firmware file must be in the root directory of utility and called dji_system.bin
To be sure that you has successfully flash new firmware, you need look status in the GO4, if firmware is not appear you must re flash.
After first flash your battery turning off very long time and VPS not active and can not be calibrated. After second flash, battery turning off fast and VPS can be calibrated.
To do any actions, you must wait till drone warm up and status lights fast blinking orange.
RC controller must be always off.
RC controller last version 1.9 is ok and works nice
Utility works only on WIN OS systems (tested on WIN 7).
If you still have problems with VPS calibrating (message - restart your drone), try disconnect internet and try again (but only after 2 same firmware flash)
Of course (i think) you loose you DJI warranty by do firmware upgrade by not official way.
Factory firmware can be restored by assistant or making flash back your stock firmware from backup.
Hope that lot of peoples will get lot of positive moments by flying DJI products now after fw downgrade. DJI make perfect drones! They flight like a dream. But they support are awful. DJI please cud you stop give some empty promises and asking "stupid" questions - have you balanced propellers act...  
Seen one video on youtube with one man who loose his P4 in swamp because of broken propeller. I measure temperature of my P4 motors after flight with v02.00.0106 and terrible shaking - i was surprised.
Think that propellers just melt (but it is only my opinion and observations).
