I use CyberLink, Power Director 13 to edit videos.  Its ok, but lags a ton when editing 4K.   Is there a better software at a reasonable price?   What do you use for your 4k editing?

Thanks guys

Aloha SR,

Sounds more like you have need for computer improvements.  4K is extremely demanding.  You should be using a computer with gaming or video editing specs.  If you think your computer is up to the 4K task you could try DaVinci Resolve 12.5.  It is free.  It also has the best color correction available.

Aloha and Drone On!

Agree with Davinci Resolve. Full featured and free for single user use. One thing it does is allow you to optimize files for editing at a lower resolution and then render full resolution when complete. Some other professional packages also do this. This allows you to edit video with little lag, and finish rendering when you are away from the computer. As others have said, 4K video is extremely demanding. Best to use a software that can use the GPU and have a computer that has a powerful GPU as CPU's are not very efficient for rendering.

Movie Studio Platinum 13, bought end of last year ( now at 14 I believe ) works well for me on quite a beefy desktop and has full 4k support.

Working with 4k video usually requires quite a bit of processing power, Movie Studio (and perhaps most editors, I don't know) can create 'proxy' files to work with in editor (1080P versions). When editing is completed it can apply all these changes to a 4k rendered version (or whatever resolution you chose). It is of course 'non destructive editing' leaving the original files undisturbed.

I am using a Lenovo Y70.   I think its a pretty powerful PC:

Spec list

•CPU: 2.5GHz Intel Core i7-4710HQ (quad-core, 6MB cache)
•Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M (4GB GDDR5 RAM)
•RAM: 16GB DDR3L.
•Screen: 17.3-inch, 1,920 x 1,080 FHD multi-touch screen.
•Storage: Hybrid 1TB (5400 RPM) plus 8GB SSD.

Your thoughts?

I'm using PD15.
I'm no expert but i'd say
Your specs sound good for RAW processing.  And for light to medium VIDEO processing ... maybe.
16 RAM is, I feel, a minimum.
Your Sata drive is a weak point, An 8GB ssd card is nearly useless except for one project at a time efforts.
Remember, as any drive gets full of data, the processing capacity diminishes.
I have 32 RAM Nividia 970 and 2 500G ssd drives
even not when processing 4k VIDS I often need to export each single step of a small project.
EI:  stabilize clips ... process (produce)
color corrections and a few effects on the processed clips ... process again
Your computer will do the job ... with patience ...
doubling memory, and a faster drive (a 7200 or a ssd/ and a 256G ssd instead of the 8G (about $150) would help a lot

Wondershare Filmora for Windows

+1 for Filmora. I looked into a number before settling on Filmora. At one extreme DaVincu Resolve offers amazing capability but not as easy to pick up and use as others, and required a powerful CPU and GPU to operate well. I grew frustrated with it fast. Filmora, on the other hand, purrs along quite happily on a lesser processor and I was able to start building videos within a couple of plays. I've only recently discovered how to use some of the transition and frame effects to good use, as well as some of the other 'add ons' such as the video cutter.

I use TunesKit AceMovi to edit videos. It's similar to Filmora but much cheaper. More importantly, you can now get it for free. You can use it to create and edit your video with basic and advanced editing tools like cropping, cutting, splitting, add text & music, apply filters, transitions, animations, split-screen, and many other cool effects.

The cheaper and easier to use (and obviously not as fancy or as many functions) is Movavi Video Editor. Good for editing, adding sounds, adding callouts and etc. Pretty much intuitive to learn.

I use Premiere CC on a Mac laptop with an external Vega-64 GPU.  The system edits and compiles 4K video just fine.
