The Federal Aviation Administration has granted approval for Amazon to test drone delivery.

Amazon had been working on that for over a year now.

Amazon announced it ambitious drone plans back in December of 2013, but it filmed the highlight reel video for that outside the US to avoid running afoul of FAA regulations. A year later it threatened to take its operations overseas if the FAA didn't allow it to begin performing outdoor testing.

They could threaten all they want there is no way they would do that.  They would loss their ability to deliver rapidly and the shipping cost would sky rocket.  The next headlines would be "Welcome Back Circuit City"

I think the FAA knew they would not move it.  But they also knew this is advancing technology and they better start to regulate it before it got away from them.

I guess intended recipients of a drone delivery will be needing a specially designated landing area. I wonder what the requirements will be...?

Just their headquarters would move overseas, not the service and depots, they would stay here, service would not be affected, but a foreign based company has different tax codes with NAFTA.

I can't belive anyone can do anything but laugh at the whole notion!

First of all, does this mean Amazon is getting into the shipping business?  Last I knew, they are not a shipping company.

So then what happens? The truck pulls up 200' away from the destination, begins loading that multi-gram package on the aircraft, while a spotter walks out to make sure no pedestrian traffic interferes, who will then knock on the door, and remove the tiny package from the aircraft.  Etc...

Multi rotors are the perfect delivery system if the package is 70% smaller and lighter then 99% of delivered packages, and the goal is to increase the time, cost, and liability of delivery.

What a joke!

From what I understand, line of sight still has to be maintained.
By the time the pilot gets GPS fix and the package connected, a walker could have knocked on the door, delivered the package and been back at the delivery truck.

I assumed the drones would be long-range, and almost entirely autonomous. Punch in the GPS coordinates and let it fly. Otherwise, what's the point?
