When we reminisce about good times that we’ve had or special moments that we’ve shared with others, very often a vacation with friends or family comes to mind.  Looking back at pictures or home video helps to recreate some of those good feelings so that the moment can be enjoyed all over again.

As a Dad and a Grandpa, using DJI drones has helped me to enhance that and take it to the next level on family trips.  Their hovering ability and tripod mode helps greatly in getting a good group picture without leaving someone out of the shot or figuring out where to place a camera or how to set a timer.  And the limits of where I can go to get great video are hugely expanded, all while the quality and steadiness of the video are vastly improved over handheld shots.  Instead of shooting from a distance, very often I can fly near or over that beautiful bit of scenery that we hiked past or add motion and direction that I could never do before.  All of this enriches the memories that we’ve been able to share later on as a family and with others.  And it doesn’t hurt that I get points for being a Grandpa who can work with this awesome technology.  :-)

My first drone was a Phantom 3.  With this I was able to learn the ropes of drone flying and photography and capture great video of a family vacation in the Black Hills.  The ability to make the camera pan smoothly from pointing straight ahead to downward while in flight made for some excellent shots.  Combining that with other photos, we edited it into a great video keepsake for the family.  Or memories of a long hike to Horsetooth Rock in Colorado with friends was made all the more memorable by being able to get some video at the peak of the triumphant group.

Then, I purchased a Mavic Pro as soon as it was released.  This is even easier to bring along on hikes and take to the places where you want to capture great pictures and video.  Hiking to some destinations can be quite strenuous, and having a light and easy-to-carry drone is a great benefit.   With it’s greater range and many features, it’s pretty simple and straightforward to take shots that have a “Wow” factor and that people think look professional.  As with the Phantom 3, it’s 3-axis stabilization means that there’s no jitteriness in the shot, as there often is when you’re holding or wearing a camera.  Everything with the drone video is smooth and sharp.

Being fairly small and highly responsive and maneuverable, the Mavic can be used for shots that have less room for error or when you want to fly close to a rocky outcropping or between trees, (all within line-of-sight, of course!).  This came in handy for our vacation this summer in the Wisconsin Dells area.  I was able to capture shots of the beautiful scenery of Devil’s Lake and Mirror Lake in great 4K video—easy to capture and easy to edit.  Having the drone along itself becomes part of the vacation fun as everyone enjoys seeing it in operation.

My wife will admit that when I first purchased a drone, she thought it was going to be just another toy.  But after the past two years, it’s hard to imagine traveling without it.

So even if you’re not a young person who has grown up with technology all your life, if you’re looking for something to help you get great pictures and video that add to your vacation memories and reminiscences, the drones mentioned above are a great place to start.  With a small amount of effort and learning you can get big results that make the purchase worth every penny.

Enjoy flying!
