Nd  filtres on the lens

I do have a set of Polar Pro ND filters (and a polarising filter), but I find them extremely difficult to fit, with my dithery old fingers. By the time I've fiddled about to change for a bright sun filter, the sky has clouded over

What good should that do?
The effect, shown as a bright spot at the center in the picture below would still be there. It just would take longer to expose the image, actually if exposed long enough it would become a trail line.
