I have three, two that came with the fly more combo and one additional.  my carry case can handle one more, but i'm not sure i really need a fourth battery.

5. Usually when I'm flying with the car close by I have 1 in the drone, 1 in my pocket, and 3 on the charger in the car. This has worked well so far and I rarely exhaust all batteries at once unless the car/power outlet is not close by.

Why is 3 the optimal number?
Charging?

3 is NOT optimal because while you're charging those 3 how are you going to fly your drone. I have 5 but think 6 would give me continual flying in the event that something really sweet was happening and I wanted to keep the Spark in the air almost continually.

Aha.
Well, I thought it was optimal because that is the amount of batteries you can charge in 1 go.
So come home, plug in the charger and leave it.
If you have more, you have to switch during the night or something.
No big issue of course, since they take about 1 hour something to charge, but still.
I expect most 'sweet' happening away from home and El. so more is welcome, but not because of continues flying.

If you exhaust all 3 and then on the drive home you see something amazing but can't film it because all your batteries are dead that would be pretty sad. I always charge the batteries up while I'm driving home just in case I need to stop and film. Today I was just driving across town (not planning on flying) but then saw a Hot Air Balloon taking off so pulled over quick and tried to film it.

I have 6.

I started with 4 but have found that this is really not enough to "keep flying" without taking significant outage time for re-charging. With a good inverter in the car I can always keep some charging, but you need to let each one cool off before charging, so you end up going through the first two before starting to charge any.

So I just bought two more but then discovered that the battery charging hub is now the bottleneck. A lot of times when I plug the 3rd battery in it pauses charging the two underway and with 3 it takes a lot longer to charge than 2 (the power supply is capped at 50W). So now I've bought a 2nd charging hub. I'm hoping to have two in each hub charging now while one is flying one is cooling off and hopefully I can fly for hours....

Couldn't agree more, but haven't bought a second charger due to price. Are you using a DJI charger or something from amazon/Ebay?

Three batteries, two from the combo plus one that I bought. That goes perfect with the charger and the shoulder bag.

I have 4, happy with that at the moment. We are entering wintertime in Norway, so it is soon only daylight when I am at work. So flying limits itselfs to weekends. Also, winter meaning sub zero temperatures, meaning not much flying until maybe March

I film weddings and my 3 batteries are just enough. First battery is for groom house and the second is for bride house. The third is optional for the church or entering a restaurant. And yes I am thinking to go for 4.

I have a 225-watt inverter in my vehicle, and the batteries go on the charger as they come out of the spark, but unfortunately usually the big delay is waiting for the batteries to cool down enough to start charging.  on my last trip out, the first and second batteries started charging at the same time so I had to wait a bit for them to finish before taking my 4th flight.

Couldn't agree more, but haven't bought a second charger due to price. Are you using a DJI charger or something from amazon/Ebay?

I bought the DJI one for $66 on Amazon (no tax, free shipping).

I researched and debated buying a 3rd party one. It seems like the only real benefit is the price.
However, in the reviews there are multiple reports of overheating or claims of it killing a battery, etc.
In the end I didn't want to have the uncertainty and worry (especially given the volatility of LiPo batteries) so I decided to pay the extra $20 or so for the DJI one. The way I saw it a battery is $50, if a charger ruins a battery (or worse) there goes any savings.

Since then I've had a chance to go out and test it. Two chargers plugged into the inverter. Each one charges a max of 2 batteries, so 4 are charging, 1 is in flight and 1 is cooling off. With this method I can stay in the air all day. Of course the RC and phone will need to be charged too but for that you can switch from OTG to WiFI and use a USB battery pack to recharge while you keep flying.
(note: with the DJI multi charger 2 batteries charge quite a bit faster than 3 due to the 50W limit on the power supply, this is why I spread them across two chargers)

Although the most important discovery was that after flying through about 10 batteries, I myself needed recharging (lunch). ;-)

Solution:
2 Sparks with RC plus a second flight device.

Btw: 6 batteries now. 2 fly more combos plus 2 extra

I also have and use 3 each time I fly. I'm thinking to still get more, but we'll see. I have a 4K drone (from a Kickstarter) that should be arriving in a week or two, and I will see how that performs before getting additional batteries. Between the 2 drones, I'll have an hour of flight time or so.
