It depends.... If you have a hard straight surface: ground launch, but if sand, grass or something is on the ground: palm launch

My typical use case is ground launch and land (no gesture controls).  This is because I don't prefer to use one hand in launching and then fumble with the control and phone for a few seconds (and given the battery life, seconds count).

There are circumstances where I will launch and retrieve from the palm, and that's where the environment is not suitable to launch from a flat surface.  But even under those circumstances I'm hesitant to palm launch, because I did myself experience a "palm launch flop" (it lifted off from my hands, and promptly fell to the ground).  I won't palm launch unless I know that should it fall it will and on a suitably soft surface.  This has only occurred once for me, on the day I updated to everything current (August 21) and I've not been able to reproduce it.

I prefer ground landing for two reasons:  To palm land I have to turn on gesture mode in the app and then do something safe with my rc+phone before I can land the craft in my hand (again, more seconds that I could use flying).  Also, I think it's more fun/challenging to land the craft on my landing target than it is to catch it in my palm.

Ground launch and hand land. For no particular reason. Most of my videos start at my feet and fly back to my hand.

When taking off from the hand, how does it do the RTH point?

You can set it on the ground before taking off in your hand.

It arrives at the spot it took off from your hand with and auto descends at landing rates.  Downward sensors help along with the picture it gets of the take off point.  So, if you hold it over water when hand launching,...splashdown!

Ground launch and land. Have a nice fold able,  transportable pad and use this all the time, also have legs on the Spark so easy take off and land, both hands on the RC ready for flight.....

Last time I tried palm launch, the Spark twisted and fell out of my hand. Ground launch for now on! If I’m taking off from Grass, dust, etc., I use a launch pad. (I actually use cardboard because it’s cheaper than the launch pads - a lot cheaper )

I have seen a video where you can make a custom launch/land pad. Search ''DIY drone landing pad'' and you'll find some tutorial. You can even paint it.

I try to avoid ground launch and land at possibly all times to avoid elements getting to the spark (gimbal and electrics). I mostly do manual hand launch and manual hand catch land.
