What's the micro USB port on the 3 battery charging hub for? can't find any info on it.

Yup. The remote is charged straight from the main power block, not the charging hub. From reading previous threads it's just for updating the hub.

You can use it to charge the battery in the AC and also used to update the FW.

The micro USB port is for firmware updates , I got told

It's for upgrading the hub's firmware.  

Unfortunately, I never managed my DJI Assistant to recognise the charging hub.

There are some statements about charging also, but these were wrong apparently.
